GRIFFITH | Against heavy odds, the Griffith volleyball team surged through its 3A Sectional 17 before eventually defeating a tough Hammond squad 25-22, 25-11, 26-26 in Saturday night's championship.
From the get go, Griffith utilized an evident team chemistry to hit, assist, dig, and spike its way to the victory sweep.
Facing an early gridlock in the opening game, Griffith used key sets from sophomore Rhiannon Kozy to strike hard during an impressive game up front from junior Jordan Baltus and sophomore Shania White.
The Panthers claimed a nail-biting 25-22 victory in game 1.
From that point on, Griffith did everything it could to convince itself this was its sectional to win. Playing in front of strong partisan crowd, the Panthers began running away with it in Game 2, at one point scoring seven straight points before winning 25-11.
Game 3 was a battle.
Trailing 11-7 in the third game, Griffith rallied for an impressive 10-0 run and a nervous 26-24 clincher.
First-year Griffith coach Erin Delaney remarked: “It’s amazing. It is a nice change of pace from early on in conference.
“I think we definitely need to cover our hitters better. We need to mix up our sets and keep attacking as a team.”
Griffith plays the winner of Saturday night's late Knox Sectional in next Tuesday's regional.
