MERRILLVILLE | For a game that featured a lead of more than 20 points, it felt a lot closer.
The Battle of Broadway featured 53 personal fouls and one technical foul, lasting nearly two hours before Andrean (1-3) emerged with a 79-64 win over Times No. 6 Merrillville.
Pirates junior Jarius Stevens led all scorers with 33 points on 11-of-20 shooting. No other Merrillville player scored in double figures.
Four players scored in double digits for Andrean, led by Nick Podkul’s 19. Ben Davidson added 17, Frank Podkul scored 12 and Ramon Guerrero scored 10 -- all in the first half.
The 59ers scored 22 points in both the second and third quarters to build their lead.
With Merrillville (1-3) trying to rally in the fourth quarter, Nick Podkul connected on back-to-back old fashioned three-point plays to put Andrean ahead 68-47 with 5:10 remaining. The lead never dropped below 10 points the rest of the game.
The game’s only technical foul was issued to Stevens after a scramble for a loose ball late in the first half. Stevens was also called for a personal foul on the play. Ben Davidson hit three of the four ensuing free throws to put the 59ers ahead 30-20 with 3:21 left in the half, turning the tide of the game.
Andrean has won three straight in the series with its Class 4A neighbor.
