CALUMET TOWNSHIP | Firefighters rescued a dog late Monday night from a burning home in the 1600 block of Elm Street.

Lake Ridge Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Pat Booth said there were numerous animals but no people in the home. It is believed only the one dog survived.

Booth said when firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Griffith and Merrillville fire departments assisted Lake Ridge in battling the blaze.
