Ok, this column isn’t so much for the moms. It’s more one that you’ll use to pass on a hint to those who may be putting something under the tree for you this holiday. You know, clip it out and stick it on the refrigerator or slip it in between the pages of your husband’s auto magazine or your kid’s comic books or casually leave it out on the kitchen table with your favorite picks highlighted in yellow or circled in red.

1) Spa Massage

There are several day spas in the region that offer massages, giving mom a little time to get away from the craziness of taking care of a family and an opportunity to relax for a little while. Navi Spa in Schererville, Vanis Salon and Day Spa with Crown Point, Schererville and Valparaiso locations and Head Control in Lansing all offer massages that moms are sure to enjoy.

2) Dinner

My number one gift request is always going out to enjoy a nice meal that I don’t have to cook. Sometimes it’s fun to try out a place that’s completely new. And sometimes it’s great to be treated to my favorite meal at a place I adore. A few of my favorite restaurants in the region are: Meyer’s Castle in Dyer, Silver Spoon in Valparaiso, House of Kobe with locations in Schererville and Merrillville, Gino’s Steakhouse in Dyer, Kelsey’s Steakhouse in Valparaiso, the Lighthouse in Cedar Lake and Café Borgia in Munster.

3) Breakfast in Bed

Again, most moms love to have a meal they didn’t have to cook. And it’s even better to have it delivered to bed!

4) Manicure and/or Pedicure

Even if you’re talented enough to make your own nails look like they were done by a professional, it’s nice to have someone else pamper you (just like it’s nice to have someone else cook for you). I tend to neglect my toes in the winter when they aren’t seen much and a Christmastime pedicure would be a definite luxury.

5) Grocery Shopping

Moms have lots of tasks on their plate and when anyone in the family pitches in to do a task without being asked, it is very much appreciated. Dads, offer mom a week off from grocery shopping duties and you’re pretty much guaranteed a few kisses under the mistletoe.

6) Clean the Car

A task that’s usually a drag, and especially during the winter, is cleaning out the car. And face it, the mess is probably coming from people other than mom — fingerprints on the window, crayons under the seats, fruit snack wrappers. Take it upon yourselves to clean out the car or send it off to have it professionally detailed and mom will be a happy camper.

7) Gift Certificates

Although gift certificates may seem impersonal, they give mom a chance to enjoy something she might not normally treat herself to. Get one for her favorite clothing store, a restaurant she likes or a certificate for movie tickets. And then make sure she uses it, which might mean arranging child care or making sure her schedule is clear so she can use it.

8) Jewelry

I’m not a big jewelry wearer, but I haven’t met a mom yet who doesn’t enjoy a little bling. That’s not to say it has to mean expensive diamonds. Does mom have a friend who sells Lia Sophia Jewelry who could help you pick out some items? Have you looked at the jewelry counter at Kohl’s for a simple necklace or bracelet that looks like it fits her style? How about a Pandora bracelet that you can customize with different charms?

9) Sweets

Okay, some moms might not have diets that allow for sweets, but if mom can have them, some fine chocolate goes a long way. Fill mom’s stocking with some Ghirardelli bars. Get a box of Frango Mints at Macy’s. Get some locally made goodies at Gayety’s Chocolates in Lansing or Schererville. Stop at Dessert Menu in Dyer and treat her to gelato or macaroons. Or make up a treat of your own for her — make her favorite ice cream treat, whip up some lemon bars or make a batch of decadent cookies.

10) Getaway

This is always the ultimate gift for a mom. While moms love time with their darling little offspring, nothing refreshes moms like a little time away. Some local spots for a relaxing overnighter with dad are the Inn and Aberdeen in Valparaiso, Serenity Springs in LaPorte or the Sybaris, with a Frankfort, Illinois location. A weekend away from it all with sisters or girlfriends is also a wonderful treat — especially close to a city with an outlet mall, like Michigan City, Kenosha, WI or Gurnee, IL. And for moms who would rather get away with the family, plan a couple days at Splash Universe in Shipshewana, which has an indoor water park.
