East Chicago's Casa Blanca has been serving authentic Mexican recipes with the Tellez family culinary touch for nearly 40 years.
"Everything is quality here and nothing has changed (with our recipes). Everything's been the same for 38 years," said Manuel Tellez, owner of Casa Blanca.
Tellez said he's happy with the successful repeat customer base as well as the number of people who visit his eatery to celebrate special occasions in Casa Blanca's banquet hall.
The restaurant, which has a Spanish courtyard style decor designed by Tellez, seats 200 with an additional 300 seating capacity in the banquet area.
The owner said all the recipes served at the eatery are derived from decades-old family favorites. Tellez was no stranger to the restaurant business when he opened Casa Blanca on Indianapolis Boulevard. He had operated a small eatery at East Chicago's Harbor-area Supermercado Mexico in the 1970s.
During a recent Saturday luncheon visit to Casa Blanca, we tried a few of the dishes that have long been popular at the restaurant.
All items are available all day at the restaurant, including the Mexican breakfast dishes. So, we included a specialty breakfast recipe for chilaquiles, ($5.95), which are strips of corn tortillas served in a cheese and sauce mixture. We also ordered chicken and mole ($8.95) and carne con chile ($8.95)
None of the dishes were overly spicy and all were substantial portions. The chicken dish received praise at our table for its flavorful sauce which had a medium consistency.
Among other popular items on the menu at Casa Blanca are steak tacos, fajitas, chiles rellenos, queso fundido, tostadas, enchiladas and much more.
The eatery also has a full bar featuring an assortment of Margaritas, wine, and beer.
