If you can't get enough of luscious sweets, head to Dyer next month for an evening of delectable desserts.

Dessert Menu, 1950 Hart St., Dyer, will present its "Dessert Flight" night from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 1 at the eatery. During the event, eatery owners Renee and Jerome Wilson celebrate with presentations of pastry art, visual art and music. The theme revolves around "The Polar Express."

A cake artist will design a standout cake taking on the theme of the evening while pastry chefs create whimsical desserts as well as sorbets and gelatos. Guitarist Marco Villareal will perform.

Eerie Cupcakes

Pastry Chicago recently held its sixth annual Amateur/Student Haunted Cupcake Competition at Harborside International Golf Center on Chicago's Southeast Side. Various students and pastry lovers joined together at the event to showcase their creative skills with sweets.

I was among five judges who rated the goodies on taste, presentation, texture and general excellence. During the event, Chef Mark Seaman of The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King Colleges at City Colleges of Chicago demonstrated interesting ways to decorate cupcakes and provided tips on working with fondant, frosting and other sweet ingredients.

First place winner was Pibeny Cortes for her Spiced Pumpkin Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Orange Cream Cheese Frosting. Heather Becker took second place while Erica Swanson came in third. Holiday Customer Appreciation Party

O'Donovan's Pub and Restaurant, 2100 W. Irving Park Road, Chicago and general manager Frankie Zela, a native of Calumet City,  present the Holiday Customer Appreciation Party from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 13. Complimentary cocktails will be featured with various appetizers created by executive chef Victor DeLeon of Chicago's Southwest Side.

A minimum suggested holiday donation of $10 will benefit Christopher House, an organization which benefits at risk children from birth to age 18. FYI: (773) 478-2100.

World of Chocolate

The AIDS Foundation of Chicago will present its 11th annual World of Chocolate gala from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 29 at Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan Ave.

Pastries, candy and savory dishes starring chocolate will be in the spotlight from Chicago-area chefs and chocolatiers. A light buffet, specialty drinks, musical entertainment and more will be featured.

The event benefits AFC's grant-making, policy and public education programs. Tickets are $125. Various ticket packages are also available. FYI: aidschicago.org
