Diners looking for a relaxing meal in a comfortable environment will no doubt enjoy a visit to The South Shore Club Bar and Grill in East Chicago.

The restaurant, located at East Chicago Marina, opened in the spring and is under the ownership of Daniel Urquiza. Urquiza is also the owner and manager of The Restaurant at The Lost Marsh. His family also operates Rodizio's at Meyer's Castle in Dyer.

"The space has a natural ambiance to it, surrounded by water with beautiful views," Urquiza said, during a recent interview when the eatery first opened.

We visited South Shore Club on a recent Monday and enjoyed a leisurely dinner. Our waiter, a cordial conversationalist,  asked where we'd like to sit and we chose a table facing the window with a view of the water and marina boats.

As we surveyed the menu, classic rock tunes played in the background further setting the relaxed mood in the dining room.

South Shore Club's menu features American fare with a variety of comfort food staples, various appetizers, sandwiches, flatbreads, assorted entrees and salads.

Our meal began with the Wedge Salad ($6) and Fried Mozzarella sticks ($6). The Wedge came with homemade ranch dressing while the mozzarella sticks were fairly large, lightly fried, and served with a sweetly flavored marinara sauce.

For our entrees, we chose the Steak Salad ($10) and Fish and Chips ($11). The salad, featuring New York steak, was garnished with tomatoes, mushrooms, and pepperoncini. Though the salad is advertised as starring Romaine lettuce, that day, spinach was featured. The Fish and Chips entree proved to be a large portion with tilapia as the star fish of the day.

Among other items featured on the menu are Buffalo Shrimp, Margarita Flatbread, Pan Seared Chicken Breast Sandwich, South Shore Club Sandwich, Pepe's Famous Nachos, Linguini Fruti Mare, Pan Seared Sea Scallops and Arrabiata Pasta.

Boater's Specials are available daily and include $3 craft beers and $2 tacos on Wednesdays and $1.50 domestic bottles and 50 cent wings on Tuesdays. Employees of the city of East Chicago, Union Card holders and mill workers also receive special discounts while dining.

South Shore Club hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call the restaurant at  (219) 391-7102.
