I was reminded of the great Teibel's dinner roll tradition last week while holiday grocery shopping with my friend at a Jewel Food Store in Burbank, Ill.
There on the shelf in the bakery department were packages of Teibel's Brown and Serve dinner rolls. I knew that Teibel's restaurant in Schererville sold their famous rolls ($5.99) in packages on the premises of the eatery but I didn't realize they were also carried in local grocery stores.
During a call to Teibel's this week I learned that Alpha Baking out of Chicago makes the rolls for the restaurant and distributes them to various grocery outlets.
"They're distributed to stores throughout Northwest Indiana, Illinois and even Wisconsin," said Joseph Pavell, executive chef of Teibel's.
Shoppers can often find them in Jewel Food Stores, Strack & Van Til and Walt's.
Pavell said the demand was there to offer them in various stores, in addition to at the eatery, and the 12-count packages have been popular in the marketplace for at least a decade or more.
Teibel's restaurant got its start in 1929 by Martin and Stephen Teibel. It began as a 12-seat diner and through the years has become famous for various dishes including fried chicken, perch and delicious dinner rolls.
Pavell said Alpha Baking delivers the rolls, which have been made to the Teibel family's specifications, daily to the restaurant in a semi-baked rendition.
"Then we bake them and finish them here," he said.
"We went through 800 dozen rolls so far this Christmas season," Pavell said.
