Byway Brewing opening

Byway Brewing, 2825 Carlson Drive, Hammond, will open at 2 p.m. Saturday. Regular hours for the new restaurant/brewery will be 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11:30 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit

Prepare for Brews at the Shoe

Tickets are now on sale for Brews at the Shoe, the third annual beer tasting event at Hammond's Horseshoe Casino.

The event, which will be held April 2, will feature more than 150 beers from more than 30 vendors. There are general admission tickets as well as special packages. For example, the Brew Master Package includes admission to the suite level with food and specialty beers.

Chicago Gourmets

The social/dining group Chicago Gourmets, which is celebrating its 19th anniversary this year, regularly presents special food and dining events across Chicagoland.

The group, made up of more than 200 members, celebrates the Windy City's dynamic food and wine scene by offering events that are both educational and enjoyable.

Don Newcomb, the group's founder, is still at the helm of the group and presents about 70 events annually at restaurants and other dining facilities around Chicago and surrounding areas.  The group has also taken day trips to Indiana and Wisconsin through the years.

Among events held through the group have been food and wine pairings, author cookbook signings and dinners, learning about chocolate making and cheese making and other activities.

To be a member, individuals pay $45 per family a year and receive a weekly newsletter and discounted prices on dining events.
