Not many people will pass up a piece of wedding cake. And cake artisans today entice sweets fans with a variety of designs and flavors.

Guests to Michigan City's Blue Chip Casino's upcoming bride blu show will have the opportunity to see an assortment of cake design ideas and talk with bakery vendors and other bridal business spokespeople at the event.

Bride blu will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Stardust Event Center at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa. The showcase features nearly 50 vendors including florists, bakeries, hair and makeup demos, wedding menu samplings, bridal shops, tux shops and more.

According to Adam Wiltfang, owner of Designer Desserts in Valparaiso, brides-to-be and future grooms will have some interesting styles to choose from when it comes to wedding cakes this season.

"The cakes have gotten a lot less modern," Wiltfang said, adding the designs are leaning more toward simple elegance, more organic shapes, muted colors and sweeping, flowing designs, such as ruffles created with frosting.

"There's a lot of textured frosting used," he said.

Wiltfang said Designer Desserts has taken part in bride blu since its inception a few years ago and the bakery is the wedding cake designer for Blue Chip Casino.

"Flavorings are also a lot more creative," Wiltfang said.

The bakery, which specializes in cupcakes and wedding cakes, currently has 87 flavors in cupcakes available and regularly makes various flavor combinations for wedding cakes.

"We're straying away from traditional vanilla and chocolate and dressing them up," he said.

Among cake flavors that can be created are cream brulee, chocolate cake with Heath pieces, tuxedo cheese cake and many more.

Wiltfang said many bridal receptions are now featuring a dessert table starring a smaller cake and some cupcakes or various other pastries. Guests visiting the Designer Desserts table at the show will have the opportunity to sample assorted cupcakes.

Also featured at the event will be a Blue Chip experience tasting, held at 12:15, 1, 1:45 and 2:30 p.m. and will include appetizers from the Blue Chip wedding menu. The tasting is available for brides who have not chosen a reception venue. Bride blu is free only with advance preregistration by the bride or groom online at brideblu.com. The wedding party can receive a total of two tickets to the event at no charge. Preregistration is also required to schedule demos, tastings, tours and one-on-one meetings with vendors. Tickets are $10 at the door on the day of event.
