Magical Night

O'Donovan's Pub and Restaurant, 2100 W. Irving Park Road in Chicago will have "A Magical Night: A History of Stagecraft and Spectacle" at 6 p.m. Nov. 15. Frankie Zela, the eatery's general manager, who is a native of Calumet City, announced that author David Witter will discuss his book "Chicago Magic: A History of Stagecraft and Spectacle" at the event and will focus on O'Donovan's/Schulien's magical history. Matt Schulien began performing at the restaurant, which was the former Schulien's, in 1915. In honor of the book discussion event Al James will perform magic tricks throughout the evening. Holiday Cookie Contest

The Downtown Hammond Council will have its Holiday Cookie Contest Nov. 23. The contest is part of the Holiday Kick-off Celebration in downtown Hammond. The contest will be held at the Hammond INovation Center, 5209 Hohman Ave. For more information, call (219) 512-4298. Cost is $5 a batch. Day of registration is $10 a batch. Pre-registration deadline is Nov. 14.
