It's time to start thinking about what you'll serve your little munchkins for Halloween.
Rather than just hauling out the store-bought candy, why not get a little creative when coming up with treats for the spookiest day of the year.
The kids will probably want to help concoct special foods for the holiday and will no doubt have fun assisting in the kitchen.
With October officially known as National Popcorn Popping Month, popcorn is often a good food to incorporate in everything from trail mixes and crunchy sweet and savory snacks to desserts.
Gather up the kids and create these special recipes.
MONSTER MASH POPCORN MUNCH
Makes 14 cups
10 cups popped JOLLY TIME® Crispy ‘n White Microwave Pop Corn
1 cup whole cashews
1 cup candy corn
1 cup sour gummy worms
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup dark corn syrup
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon cayenne, if desired
2 tablespoons butter
DIRECTIONS: Mix popcorn, cashews, candy corn, and gummy worms in a large bowl. Place sugar, corn syrup, and spices in medium saucepan. Bring to a boil; cook and stir about 3 minutes or until sugar is dissolved. Stir in butter until melted. Pour hot sugar mixture over popcorn mixture; toss until coated. Cool before serving.
1bag popped JOLLY TIME® Healthy Pop 94% Fat Free Butter Flavor Microwave Pop Corn, popped (about 12 cups)
1 cup chow mein noodles
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/8 cup white chocolate or almond bark
1 package (12 ounces) butterscotch or peanut butter chips
DIRECTIONS: Pop popcorn according to package directions. Open bag carefully and pour into large bowl; discard unpopped kernels. Add chow mein noodles to bowl. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt baking chips, peanut butter and white chocolate, uncovered, on HIGH (100 percent power) for 2 minutes; stir well. Pour over popcorn mixture; stir until evenly coated. Drop mixture by large rounded tablespoonfuls onto wax paper-lined cookie sheets. Refrigerate until firm, 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Store in tightly covered container.
Yield: 15 servings
CARAMEL CORN APPLES
6 cups popped JOLLY TIME® Blast O Butter or Butter Licious Microwave Pop Corn
2 cups crisp rice cereal
1/2 cup chopped dried apples
1 package (14 ounces.) caramels, about 48, unwrapped*
2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
DIRECTIONS: Place popped popcorn, rice cereal and apples in large bowl. In medium saucepan over low heat, heat caramels, water and butter until caramels are melted, stirring frequently. Stir in cinnamon. Pour caramel mixture over popcorn and toss to coat well. Let cool about 5 minutes. With slightly dampened hands shape into 8 balls around wooden sticks. Place on lightly-buttered wax paper to set. Wrap in plastic wrap; tie with a ribbon. Microwave caramels, water and butter in medium microwave-safe bowl on HIGH 2-1/2 to 3 minutes or until smooth, stirring every minute.
Yield: 8 popcorn balls
