Established in Frankfort, Illinois in 1969, Alsip Home & Nursery opened their 17-acre St. John location in 1994. Since then, the independently owned business has become an integral part of the local community.

For example, earlier this year, Alsip marked the 1st annual Arbor Day celebration in St. John with the donation of a flowering Japanese tree lilac to the Parks Department. More recently, a new digital, 3-D landscape design was created by Alsip as part of the project to gain historical building status for the Lourdes Grotto at Whiting’s Immaculate Conception Church.

Throughout the years, customers from all over northwest Indiana have come to rely on the expert guidance of the professionals at Alsip for tips on everything from pruning trees and shrubs to landscape design, new plant introduction, lawn care, rose care and feeding wild birds along with the time-tested dependability of the area’s largest, most comprehensive landscape supply center for all the supplies they need to create beautiful, livable outdoor spaces.

Along with a 140,000 square foot off site growing greenhouse to provide the freshest possible seasonal plants, Alsip stocks an extensive selection of everything from brick, block and rock to trees, shrubs and perennials.

Bringing together the best of every season, Alsip is also the retailer of choice for outdoor living, home décor and gifts. The ever-growing pet supply department is also home to Groomingdales Pet Salon and the brand-new Animal Care Center of St. John, a full-service veterinary care facility open seven days a week (no appointment necessary).

Coming this Tuesday, Alsip is hosting a blowout Tent Sale ahead of their annual Customer Appreciation Day next Saturday, June 22. Following an extensive remodel of their retail space that included a fresh coat of paint, rearranging the lawn and garden department, replacing portions of the roof, upgrading old heating and air conditioning units with brand new, high efficiency and very “green” units, and building out new space for the vet clinic last winter, Alsip is ready to finish cleaning house by offering customers some excellent savings on dozens of great items throughout the store through next Sunday, June 23.

“We started Customer Appreciation Day three years ago as a fun and enjoyable way to celebrate how much we value our loyal customers,” CEO Rich Christakes said. “The first year we had a corn roast in the fall, and then last year we changed things up a bit and moved it up to late June after the results of the Best of the Region voting were released. Once again, we are so grateful to have been voted Best Garden/Nursery Store by readers of the Times and Shore in 2013, and we’re looking forward to giving something back to the customers that support us all year long.”

Similar to last year’s event, Customer Appreciation Day this year will feature a complimentary hot dog lunch plus free samples of Alsip’s famous homemade Ruthie's Fudge and tasty gourmet DIY appetizers from 11am-1pm next Saturday.

There will also be an exclusive One Day Sale with special offers from Alsip’s suppliers resulting in some of the lowest prices of the year throughout the store. Look for great savings on everything you need to keep your garden growing and entertain in style this summer. Plus A-List Members earn double points on everything in the store for the entire day – even new members!

When he’s not joining co-host Drew Thomas of Thomas Irrigation for a live broadcast of the Green Green Garden’s radio show (regularly aired at 9 a.m. Thursdays on WJOB/AM1230), look for Christakes in the Dunk Tank “hot seat” as he and other Alsip staff members get soaked for a good cause.

Customers can take three throws for $3 with all the proceeds going to the Halo of Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization devoted to impacting the lives of children who have cancer in Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area.

“The Dunk Tank is sponsored by the Northwest Indiana Landscapers Association (NWILA),” Christakes said. “We are proud to be the primary suppliers for all the landscape installation companies of the association. When we create one of our cutting-edge 3-D landscape designs for a homeowner, we are happy to recommend any of them as subcontractors for the installation. Members are committed to bidding properly and standing behind their work.”

Custom 3-D landscape designs for your home are new at Alsip this year.

“Homeowners really enjoy seeing what they can do with their landscape,” Christakes said. “They can see what it will look like since it’s full-color and drawn to scale. We’ve got the latest technology while everyone else is still doing designs on a napkin.”
