Once again, the Alsip Home & Nursery team has been hard at work preparing for their highly-anticipated spring kick-off event.

Dedicated to bringing you “The Best of Every Season,” Alsip – with locations in St. John and Frankfort, IL - invites you to the area’s most comprehensive Flower & Garden Show featuring the unique opportunity to discuss your specific needs with dozens of industry pros along with powerful educational seminars loaded with helpful tips and tricks for bringing the latest trends home plus special savings for all your spring needs, great concessions and a chance to win up to $500 with many more prizes also awarded.

There’s something for everyone during the two big days Alsip has planned for this weekend only.

“Last year we had over a 1,000 people enter the drawing for two iPads, so we we’re looking forward to having even more winners this year,” Alsip owner Rich Christakes said. “Everyone who visits our Gold Leaf sponsors and turns in a ticket to win has a chance to win one of six Alsip Home & Nursery gift card’s awarded at each store. Plus, our guest vendors always bring along some amazing prizes that add to the fun.”

A co-host with Thomas Irrigation co-owner Drew Thomas of the Green Green Garden's radio show – 9am Thursdays on WJOB/AM1230 – Christakes genuinely enjoys helping people beautify their yards. In addition to sharing practical knowledge and their unique blend of expertise on the air each week, Christakes and Thomas always look forward to addressing the needs of real local homeowners. Look for them, as they will be broadcasting live from Alsip in St. John at 2pm today.

“The show is a lot of fun, and it’s developed quite a following,” he said. “People always have questions when it comes to creating and maintaining a great landscape and lawn, but we also have a dedicated group of do-it-yourselfers - DIY flower and vegetable gardeners - in the area. Right now there’s a big push for organic solutions, so we’ve really focused on this area and have some great new products.”

This year’s Gold Leaf sponsors include Great Lakes Landscape Management, Jolly Gardener Premium, The Care of Trees, St. Gabriel Organics, Black Gold, Massarelli’s Fine Stone Garden Accents, Border Concepts and Rabbit Scram. All total, more than three dozen industry pros in the areas of landscape services, lawn & garden care, outdoor living, plant goods, pets & supplies and wild bird will be showcasing their latest products and providing valuable advice.

There will also be some amazing food with Blue 82, Parmesans Wood Stone Pizza, Four K’s Kettle Corn and White Hawk Country Club providing concessions and Weber Grill hosting cooking demonstrations from 11am-3pm both days.

“We know from past years how much people appreciate the chance to meet these representatives face-to-face right here in our local community,” Alsip’s St. John Nursery Manager Bryon Angerman said. “Like our customers, we keep a pulse on what’s happening in the industry over the winter so we’re ready with all the latest trends plus tried and true solutions for all their lawn and garden needs.”

Look for lemon slice superbells, one of the season’s hottest new annuals, with eye-catching examples of all the ways you can use these unique pinwheel patterned bright yellow-and-white blossoms.

“We have so many new plant items this year,” Angerman said. “We’re featuring four new hydrangeas for 2013, a few new flowering hibiscus colors, new dwarf compact varieties of roses - including some first editions, new compact fruit plants – blueberries and raspberries for example - that bear more fruit and provide a bigger bounty in less space. With the trend toward sustainable gardens, we’re seeing so many more plants in general that are more compact, more colorful and lower maintenance.”

Alsip is also planning to introduce 15 new perennials throughout the season, and there will be complete planting details as well as information on when you can expect them to be ready for your garden later this spring.

Scheduled throughout the weekend, new “Learn & Grow” seminars are designed to help you achieve garden greatness and cover topics such as pruning and tree care, new plant introduction, water and irrigation, organic vegetable and herb gardening, knock out roses, easy summer bulbs and more.

“People are realizing they don’t need a farm in their backyard to grow some of the food they eat,” Angerman added. “Fruits, herbs and vegetables don’t always require a lot of space. We’ll show you how edibles can be grown in raised beds, containers and even mixed in with shrubs, perennials and annuals.”

Adding to all the excitement of the Flower & Garden Show in St. John, visitors will find the debut of an entirely updated interior, with the Animal Care Center of St. John now open and the addition of an all-new digital landscape design service.

You can learn more about both of these exciting new options on Sunday.

Landscape Design will be the topic at 1pm with Alsip Green Team Experts demonstrating how they can easily provide you with a handy 3-D rendering of a landscape plan custom designed for your home.

Then at 2pm, Dr. John Coyne, who has been practicing veterinary medicine for more than 35 years, will introduce you to the new Animal Care Center which is staffed by four committed veterinarians and open 7 days a week for your convenience.
