Nest Labs co-founder Tony Fadell’s newest gadget has been called the iPod of thermostats.

Perhaps that’s because Fadell approached Apple with the idea for a new gadget many years ago. It was a pocket-sized hard-disk MP3 player, and Apple released the first one over a decade ago. Fadell “retired” from Apple’s iPod division, where he was also instrumental in designing the first three generations of the iPhone, in 2008.

While building a green home, Fadell began designing the next generation thermostat – “a thermostat that is smart, thrifty and so delightful that saving energy was as much fun as shuffling an iTunes playlist.” The Nest, which has been reported to pay for itself in one-two years of use, was first released in 2011.

“Most people leave the house at one temperature and forget to change it,” the company says. “So Nest learns your schedule, programs itself and can be controlled from your phone. Teach it well and Nest can lower your heating and cooling bills up to 20%.”

Starting with simple installation (three out of four people install Nest in 30 minutes or less) and available concierge installation service, Nest optimizes itself after you answer a few basic questions about your home and comfort preferences. Over time, the system learns even more from your temperature changes, and the Nest Leaf tells you when you’re saving energy.

You can always edit your schedule in seconds on Nest or remotely over Wi-Fi using your Nest account. Plus, Nest’s Auto-Away™ feature automatically turns to an energy-efficient away temperature when you’re gone. It also reflects your wall color so it blends in with any décor.

You’ll find complete details along with a compatibility checker at www.nest.com. You can purchase the newly udated 2nd Generation Nest direct from the company, at Best Buy and some local home improvement stores, plus the Apple Store.
