Gary Lighthouse College Preparatory Academy: Michael Morgan ‘13

Michael Morgan is confident that he is ready for college and beyond thanks to the education and support he has received at Gary Lighthouse Charter School (GLCS) and at home from his family. Michael describes GLCS as “Transformative”. He says that GLCS transformed his outlook on college, taught him how to conduct himself in the world, and how to be a productive citizen. He considers himself lucky to have had the opportunity to attend GLCS and sees the differences in development and outlook from his friends in other schools.

As a senior, Michael is in the midst of the application process for college. He is applying to Georgetown, Yale, UC Berkley, University of Chicago, and University of Connecticut. He plans to study economics and foreign policy, and is already planning to go to graduate school. He has always enjoyed classes that are applicable to daily life and has been focused on economics for a while. He spent this past summer in New York City taking courses at NYU in Foreign Aid and Economic Development

Michael started at GLCS in 5th grade when the school opened in 2005. He says he had no idea that this school would make such an impact on him. The school culture and the focus on social development have really helped form Michael. From the SHINE character education to Student Unions on Fridays, Michael learned how to conduct himself and interact with his peers. The SHINE program includes a focus on the following social skills and character traits needed to be successful: Self-discipline, Humility, Intelligence, Nobility and Excellence. Michael says that he feels the focus on Excellence has been critical to his success as he learned to strive for excellence both in and out of the classroom. He feels that excellence in all areas encompasses all of the other qualities as well. Michael speaks fondly of Student Unions which are held on Fridays to celebrate successes across the school.

Michael has been involved in many extra-curricular activities over the last four years including cross country, track and field, martial arts, mentor program, honors society and student council. Currently, he is very active in the student council to fundraise for the various school events and to promote the SHINE program. He is in the process of starting a culture club.

Michael has had strong guidance at school. He credits Principal, Ms. Chrissy Hart, with inspiring him to reach his goals. She always follows his weekly reports and is sure to speak to him about them. According to Michael, she made it possible for him to spend the summer at NYU. He notes that she truly cares about her students and sets the tone for the staff. He also uses the support he has available at GLCS including the Director of College Transitions, Emily Morgan, and his counselor, Rosemary Moran.

Michael has had strong guidance at home as well in his mother. Michael says that she has been the most inspiring person in his life. After having one child, she continued to strive for excellence and completed her Bachelors degree while managing a full time job. She eventually went back to school and received a Masters in Public Administration. To this day, she has been his inspiration to go the extra mile in both her academic achievements and in her strong character. According to Michael, “Her effortless poise and grace is admirable and I hope to emulate her someday.”

Michael plans to enjoy this last year at GLCS. He will miss his Lighthouse family but he will be ready for the next challenge. We look forward to seeing which university Michael chooses.
