There was this one day when I was a kid that I remember clear as day. The house we lived at was maybe a block away from Reavis Elementary School in Lansing. My dad took me to the park to play. Neither of my brothers joined us. It was just the two of us and my stuffed bunny, and I was thrilled.
We spent most of our time on the swings. He would push me as high as he could, then run underneath me while I was flying high. We called it "the underdog." My mom probably would've cringed at the sight of this while my dad and I laughed and did it again.
Later when we walked home, I noticed my bunny was starting to tear at the neck and showed my dad. As soon as we go home, he took my bunny into emergency surgery and sewed it right back up. I didn't know my dad was a stuffed animal doctor or that he knew how to sew, but he did a pretty darn good job.
He was my hero that day. He's been the hero many times since then, too. Like that one time I accidentally killed the battery of my car when I was downtown and he showed me how to jump start it. Or the time after that when he showed me how to jump start my car again.
Now that I've shared my story about how my dad is simply the best dad around, it's time for you to tell me why your dad is awesome, too! All you have to do is write up a short essay about why your dad is the coolest and share a picture to Celebrate@nwi.com for the NWI Communities Father's Day Contest. We've lined up some great prizes, including four tickets to the Monday, Aug. 18 Chicago White Sox game versus the Baltimore Orioles, so start writing!
