The South Suburban Humane Society has a spay/neuter clinic at 18349 S. Halsted that offers low-cost spay/neuter surgeries to dogs and cats in the south Chicago suburbs and Northwest Indiana. During the month of February, cost is $55 for dog surgeries and $40 for cat surgeries. A $15 rabies vaccination is required if owners do not have proof their pet is current. Other low-cost vaccinations will be available on the day of surgery only.

Northwest Indiana Bird and Ferret Association and Mach One Farms are once again offering dog sled rides, which will take place in North Judson and operate with or without snow and during rain or shine. Cost is $50 and includes the chance to run a three-dog sled team in an open field setting. All funds go to help provide much needed food, vet care and housing for the rescues of the NWIBA.

The Humane Society NWIN is in need of supplies. The shelter has taken in many of the flood victims' animals and several are still with the shelter. RIDE-FOR-PRIDE | Region

The Northwest Indiana Bird and Ferret Association, Inc. is hosting its second annual Ride-for-Pride. For $50 participants can drive a dog sled team. Funds go to help care for the animals that the NWIBFA rescues. Rides take place through rain, sunshine or snow and are scheduled on Saturday and Sunday through April 1, except Feb. 16, and March 23-27, when weekday bookings are taken. Mach One only allows 2 bookings per day (10 a.m. and 2 p.m.) for the safety and health of the dogs. Book early because spaces fill up quickly.

SENIOR FOR SENIOR ADOPTION PROGRAM | Region

Chihuahua Rescue, USA will be offering more types of dogs available for adoption -- mainly mixed breeds and older dogs -- through a new program. Several high-kill shelters are located in Kentucky and Tennesssee, where several of the organization's members are. They will send one dog to this region until it is adopted, then another. Lower adoption fees will be offered to seniors adopting these senior dogs.

The Humane Society Calumet Area is in need of KMR, a kitten milk replacement, and Esbilac, a puppy milk replacement, to ensure these young animals get their needed nutrients. The HSCA cares for hundreds of homeless baby animals every day. Many of the kittens and puppies do not have a mother and need to be bottle fed. The shelter is very low on these items. Other items needed on a regular basis are 55-gallon trash bags and liquid laundry detergent. Donations are desperately needed at this time and can be dropped off at the shelter located at 421 45th St.

The Northwest Indiana Bird Association is offering parroting classes -- great for those who own their first bird, would like new activities and tricks to bond with their bird, want to curb behaviior problems, or are just looking to improve their parrot-parenting skills. Classes are 60 to 90 minutes long in your home. There are weekend, evening and some holiday hours available. Classes are reasonably priced and each participant receives a step-by-step booklet demonstrating all the tricks, tips and hints taught throughout the class.

SPECIAL NEEDS FUND | Munster

The Humane Society Calumet Area needs help with the Special Needs Fund to treat animals they could not otherwise afford to treat such as heartworm-positive dogs, injured animals and animals that have special needs. Along with this program comes the need for foster families that commit to two to six weeks of fostering an animal that needs time to recuperate or isn't old enough to be in the shelter. All of the proceeds from the microchipping program go toward the special needs fund, but they're still in need of help in building it.

Recycling pays! The Humane Society Calumet Area has joined with Abitibi Consolidated to save the environment and fundraiser at the same time. The public is invited to recycle newspaper, magazines, catalogs, envelopes, folders, copy paper and mail in the green bin outside the shelter at 421 45th St. Every time the bin is picked up, the shelter receives money to save more homeless animals.

SENIOR PET PROGRAM | Munster

The Humane Society Calumet Area, 421 45th St., is offering a $50 discount to those older than 60 years when they give a shelter animal a "forever home." This makes the price of a dog (older than 6 months) only $50 and a puppy (younger than 6 months) for $100 or a cat (older than 6 months) $20 and a kitten (younger than 6 months) $50. Pet interaction with seniors has shown to improve life quality for both animal and owner.

ADOPT A GREAT DANE | Nation

Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League is a nine-state rescue that focuses on placing Danes and Dane mixes in loving homes. The group also focuses on educating people about deaf dogs, for example (see deafdogs.org). Not everyone with a deaf Dane is willing to put the time into training and they end up in rescue and are hard to place. MAGDRL shows owners how to handle deaf and vision-impaired Danes so they don't have to give them up.
