Vivian Vallone combined a love of animals with a knack for event planning and organized the first Lake County Pet Expo in 2008. This year, the Crown Point pet-sitter hopes it will go even better.
"Last year we made about $2,000, which went to all the rescues (and shelters)," she said. "Our goal this year is to make from $3,000 to $3,500."
Whatever profits are realized when the day is done will be split among more than 20 animal shelters and rescue organizations.
Vallone and Julie Holt of Schererville secured the Industrial Building at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point and brought in 18 vendors who will offer everything from boutique pet items and massage to agility demonstrations and pet treats.
"We only have a limited amount of space," Vallone said. "It's a large building but we don't want it to be crowded."
Vallone requires all the animal welfare organizations to bring some of their animals available for adoption. Falling in love with a photo is a lot less likely than falling for the furry being you can touch and cuddle, she said.
Vendors are charged a rental fee that covers the cost of the building so that animal agencies can exhibit free. More than 20 shelters and rescue organizations will bring along dogs, cats and even guinea pigs. From mixed-breed rescues and shelters to breed-specific rescue agencies, potential adopters have a good chance of finding the ideal pet.
Vallone also hopes to spread the word about puppy mills. Some of the rescues have dogs that are products of puppy mills," she said. "People should be more aware of this."
Dr. Sam McTheron will offer presentations throughout the day on heartworm prevention, there will be obedience and agility demonstrations, and microchipping will be available for $10 for those who preregister by calling (219) 962-2853.
Food and beverages will be offered for sale by Gene's Catering.
Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome.
The $2 admission fee pays for a raffle ticket, with additional tickets available for sale for $1 each. Prizes are donated by vendors and range from heartworm testing and pet photo sessions to boutique pet accessories and treats.
