WALK-A-THON, PET FAIR | Hammond

Second Chance 4 Pets Network will sponsor a Paws in Paradise Walk-a-thon and Pet Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Robertsdale Little League Complex, 119th Street and Wolf Lake. The pet fair will include a pet blessing at 10:15 a.m., vendors, animal rescues, K-9 demonstrations, food, merchandise, pet contests and games. The group also will offer microchipping for a nominal fee, and a pet photographer will be on hand. Pets are welcome to walk in the walk-a-thon, but must be leashed and current on vaccinations. Proceeds benefit the rescue.

DOG WASH | Portage

Portage Animal Hospital will host a dog wash from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the hospital, 3411 Airport Road. Each wash costs $5, and the event will include games for kids, snow cones, elephant ears, vendors and K-9 demonstrations. Proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana.

The South Side All Breed Training Club will host a Responsible Dog Ownership Day from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at Wolf Lake - Shelter 2, 12600 Ave. O, Chicago. The event will include games and prizes, rescues and shelters, training tips, arts and crafts, food and a blessing of the dogs at 2 p.m.

Recipients of public aid (Food Stamps, Medicaid, Unemployment or Disability) can have their pet spayed or neutered at the Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic for a low cost: $50 for dogs, $30 for cats. Feral cats and pit bulls can also be fixed at these prices, regardless of owner income.

The Michigan City Animal Control Division has announced a volunteer program that will encompass kennel duties located at Michigan City’s Central Maintenance on the west side. Duties will include feeding cats and dogs and cleaning the kennels. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER TRANSPORT | Gary

Dog and cat owners looking to get their pets fixed can take advantage of a transport program offered by the South Suburban Humane Society in Glenwood, Ill. The program transports pets to the clinic from Gary on the second Wednesday of the month. The clinic offers special rates for low-income families and those receiving disability, Social Security, unemployment or other public aid. Other vaccinations and procedures are available the day of surgery.
