Black is the new color for Spring and the Independent Cat Society is celebrating this by hosting an adoption special for the month of April. Any black cat or kitten at the shelter is available for adoption for $50. A companion cat of any color or size is $25 more.

FUNDRAISER | Merrionette Park, Ill.

The South Suburban Humane Society will host its Street Fair for the Fur Kids Fundraiser and Adoption Event from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park, Ill. Money raised will go to the humane society's Extreme Makeover to the more than 40-year-old shelter. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children and may be bought online. The event will include raffle baskets, silent auctions, food, beer and wine. There also will be street fair entertainers, walking magicians, fortune tellers and adoptable animals, with entertainment by Party Hardigans.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM | Michigan City

The Michigan City Animal Control Division has announced a volunteer program that will encompass kennel duties located at Michigan City’s Central Maintenance on the west side. Duties will include feeding cats and dogs and cleaning the kennels. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER TRANSPORT | Gary

Dog and cat owners looking to get their pets fixed can take advantage of a transport program offered by the South Suburban Humane Society in Glenwood, Ill. The program transports pets to the clinic from Gary on the second Wednesday of the month. The clinic offers special rates for low-income families and those receiving disability, Social Security, unemployment or other public aid. Other vaccinations and procedures are available the day of surgery.
