FUNDRAISER | Crown Point

The Lake County Animal Shelter will host a "Fire Up the Grill" event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the shelter, 3011 W. 93rd Ave. Nina G. Photography's Fotos 4 Fido will be on hand to take photos of pets. Cost is $10 for a 5-by-7-inch photo and $15 for an 8-by-10-inch photo. All money raised will go toward treating seven heartworm positive dogs at the shelter.

DOG BITE SEMINAR | Schererville

Bear Run Animal Hospital will host a seminar called "Dog and Family Safety: Strategies for Dog Bite Prevention" from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Schererville Community Center, 500 E. Joliet St. The event, in conjunction with the Schererville Parks and Recreation Department, will educate the public on how to avoid dog bites and be aware of the warning signs dogs give when they feel threatened, with the goal of saving the lives of humans and dogs. Registration is requested for this free event.

Recipients of public aid (Food Stamps, Medicaid, Unemployment or Disability) can have their pet spayed or neutered at the Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic for a low cost: $50 for dogs, $30 for cats. Feral cats and pit bulls can also be fixed at these prices, regardless of owner income.

The Michigan City Animal Control Division has announced a volunteer program that will encompass kennel duties located at Michigan City’s Central Maintenance on the west side. Duties will include feeding cats and dogs and cleaning the kennels. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.



The Independent Cat Society is building a Rainbow Bridge Garden where the human-animal bond is celebrated and beloved companions can be memorialized. Memorial bricks are available for either $125 or $75. Order forms are available on the website or at the shelter.

Petite Paws is in need of volunteers and foster homes. Volunteers are needed to help make calls, raise funds, transport, attend events and foster.



Dog and cat owners looking to get their pets fixed can take advantage of a transport program offered by the South Suburban Humane Society in Glenwood, Ill. The program transports pets to the clinic from Gary on the second Wednesday of the month. The clinic offers special rates for low-income families and those receiving disability, Social Security, unemployment or other public aid. Other vaccinations and procedures are available the day of surgery.
