Lakeshore PAWS will participate in Smalls Landscaping's Bloomin' BBQ Bash from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 13 at Smalls Landscaping, 310 N 325 E, Valparaiso. The BBQ event takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with BBQ, Figure Eight Brewing Beers, music, door prizes and a 10-percent-off sale on trees, urns and garden ornaments. Smalls will donate 10 percent of the day's sales to Lakeshore PAWS.

DOG WALK | Valparaiso

Lakeshore PAWS will host a dog walk, followed by a party in the park, from 5 to 10 p.m. July 20 at Central Park Plaza in downtown Valparaiso. The event features music by the Crawpuppies, awards, food and entertainment for kids and adults alike, plus pet vendors and homeless pets to adopt from Lakeshore PAWS.

During the month of July, the Independent Cat Society will offer its "Shades of Grey" adoption promotion. The shelter will offer any gray or mix of gray cat or kitten for $35. Any additional gray or gray mix cat or kitten is $15. All cats older than 5 are free.

BOOK SALE FUNDRAISER | Chesterton

The Independent Cat Society will hold its annual Used Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 19 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 20 at the American Legion Hall, 798 Wabash, Chesterton. Most books will be sold for $1 or less. Other cat items will be for sale as well. Proceeds benefit the shelter. Donations of used books, CDs, tapes and posters are needed and may be dropped off at the American Legion from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 18. Donation receipts will be offered for tax purposes.

COST SPAY/NEUTER | Munster

Recipients of public aid (Food Stamps, Medicaid, Unemployment or Disability) can have their pet spayed or neutered at the Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic for a low cost: $50 for dogs, $30 for cats. Feral cats and pit bulls can also be fixed at these prices, regardless of owner income.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM | Michigan City

The Michigan City Animal Control Division has announced a volunteer program that will encompass kennel duties located at Michigan City’s Central Maintenance on the west side. Duties will include feeding cats and dogs and cleaning the kennels. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER TRANSPORT | Gary

Dog and cat owners looking to get their pets fixed can take advantage of a transport program offered by the South Suburban Humane Society in Glenwood, Ill. The program transports pets to the clinic from Gary on the second Wednesday of the month. The clinic offers special rates for low-income families and those receiving disability, Social Security, unemployment or other public aid. Other vaccinations and procedures are available the day of surgery.
