GIRLS' NIGHT OUT | Munster
The Humane Society Calumet Area is hosting a Girls' Night Out event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The event, which will include desserts, shopping and massages, will be held at the shelter, 421 45th St. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the night of the event.

COMEDY SHOW | Chesterton
A "Laugh for Paws" comedy show will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Feb. 11 at the American Legion, 798 Wabash Ave. Proceeds from the benefit will go to the Porter County Animal Shelter. Comedians start at 7 p.m. and live music is from 9 to 11 p.m. The event includes food, drinks, raffles, a 50/50 and door prizes. Cost is $15 per person or $20 per couple. Tickets can be purchased at the shelter, 2065 Heavilin Rd., at the legion or at the door the night of the show.

South Suburban Humane Society's Spay Neuter Clinic is holding a low-cost vaccination clinic from 8 to 11 a.m. Feb. 11. Get rabies, canine/feline distemper, and kennel cough vaccines for pets. Microchips with registration and Frontline also are available. Special prices with proof of low income. No appointment necessary.

VALENTINE WEEKEND | Westville
The Independent Cat Society will host a Sweetheart Valentine Weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 11 at the shelter, located at U.S. 6 and County Line Road. During this event, the shelter will highlight its Sweetheart Contest and will promote its Dynamic Duos promotion. The event also includes items for sale, home-baked items, snacks and coffee or hot chocolate.

SWEETHEART CONTEST | Westville
The Independent Cat Society is hosting its "Sweetheart Contest" in which 10 cats will compete for the title of "Sweetheart of the Year." Votes/donations must be cast by Feb. 29. Vote by visiting the organization's website and clicking on the PayPal emblem. Indicate you are placing a vote for the sweetheart of your choice, and name the cat. You may also mail a check, payable to the ICS, to P.O. Box 735, Westville, IN 46391. Indicate the choice on the check. The cat receiving the most donations will be named the "Sweetheart of the Year."

DYNAMIC DUOS | Westville
The Independent Cat Society is offering a special promotion through the month of February in which pairs of cats who are bonded or dependent on each other and must be placed in a home together will be available for a special cost of $50. This fee also will apply to any two cats or kittens who aren't "duos" but are adopted together. The fee includes spay or neuter, nail trim, current vaccinations, flea treatment and a free initial vet visit.

WORLD SPAY DAY | Munster
Celebrate "World Spay Day" on Feb. 28 at the Humane Society Calumet Area, 421 45th St. The shelter will provide tours of the clinic, conduct a question and answer session with the shelter's resident veterinarian and distribute information on spay and neutering. Refreshments will be provided.

WHERE BEST FRIENDS MEET | Schererville
The Humane Society Calumet Area will host its 9th annual "Where Best Friends Meet" event — a dinner, dance and silent auction — March 10 at the Halls of St. George. Silent auction items include pet supplies, gift certificates, sports memorabilia, hotel stays and Walt Disney World passes. Proceeds from the event will benefit the animals at the shelter. Tickets are available at the shelter, 421 45th St., and are $40 per person. Tickets purchased after March 1 are $45.

LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER TRANSPORT | Gary
Dog and cat owners looking to get their pets fixed can take advantage of a transport program offered by the South Suburban Humane Society in Glenwood, Ill. The program transports pets to the clinic from Gary on the second Wednesday of the month. The clinic offers special rates for low-income families and those receiving disability, Social Security, unemployment or other public aid. Other vaccinations and procedures are available the day of surgery.
