GARY | A Gary woman shot in the chest last week has died from her wounds, the Lake County coroner's office said.

Tanika Bonner, 33, was shot Friday in the 5000 block of Vermont Street in Gary.

She was driving a car east on 30th Avenue when two cars with their high beams on approached from behind, a police report states.

A woman in the car with Bonner told police Bonner sped up and lost control while making a left turn north onto Vermont Street.

Bonner hit a tree on the east side of the street, and the car came to a stop.

"Unknown suspects" then shot up the car, police said. Bonner was hit under the left armpit, in the left side of her chest. A man in the car was shot in the left foot and left upper arm. Another person in the car was shot in the left leg below the knee.

Bonner and the others were transported to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary.

Bonner was pronounced dead Monday but kept alive until early Wednesday morning because she was an organ donor, a Lake County coroner's office spokesman said.

The car was shot seven times, and investigators found 10 casings near the scene.

The coroner's office ruled Bonner's death a homicide.

Gary police are investigating.
