NATO summit poses challenge for Chicago police

In this Aug. 26, 1968, file photo, Chicago police officers confront a demonstrator on the ground at Grant Park in Chicago during the city's hosting of the Democratic National Convention. Chicago police officers will be facing big challenges when protesters descend on the city for the upcoming summit of NATO leaders May 20-21. The coming protests also are the big test for Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, a former ranking commander in the New York City Police Department and protege of NYPD Commissioner William Bratton, who Mayor Rahm Emanuel selected last year to lead Chicago’s 12,000-member force.
