The Lansing Police Cadets will be holding a fundraising event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lansing Municipal Airport, Glenwood-Lansing Road and Burnham Avenue. The event has been held each spring for several years now and it’s something that my kids have really enjoyed. If you have little ones who love anything with wheels, this is something you won’t want to miss.
The “Touch-A-Truck” event offers kids a chance to get a close up look at police, fire and construction equipment. My kids have also examined military vehicles at the event in the past and had a chance to try on equipment worn by a SWAT team.
Car seat safety checks will also be available as well as a K9 demonstration. Admission is $5 per person or $20 for a family pass. Children under age 1 are free. All proceeds help to fund the Lansing Police Cadet trip to the 2013 Illinois State Law Enforcement Explorer’s Conference.
LARC to hold appreciation dinner
at 6 p.m. Friday, LARC, a nonprofit organization that provides services and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, will host its annual appreciation dinner at Villa Cesare, 900 Eagle Ridge Drive, Schererville.
From the years that I’ve attended LARC events and seen how much good is done for its clients and their families, I know that there is plenty of appreciation due to those who are involved. Through their workshop and assistance in living arrangements, LARC has provided a better way of life for so many. Its employees and volunteers are so dedicated.
If you ever want to attend an event that will put a smile on your face, LARC’s fish fry, which is held each fall will do that. I love being there as dinner finishes up and the clients take to the dance floor. I’ve also been to an appreciation dinner and it’s heartwarming to see the clients interact with each other and the staff.
The dinner is open to the public and will include recognition of LARC employees, supporters and clients for their exceptional service within the organization. Tickets are $50 per person and include hors d’oeurves, a plated meal and beverages. There will be a split the pot cash raffle, silent auction and other prizes, including a chance to win a one week stay at a condo in the Gulf of Mexico.
To purchase a ticket stop by LARC, at 19043 Wentworth Ave. in Lansing. For more information contact Garry Buell or Lisa Vale at (708) 474-1540.
Patti Leach Scholarship offered
If you attended Lansing schools in the late 1960s up to the mid 2000s, chances are you had Patti Leach as a gym teacher at some point. Leach was a dedicated physical education teacher, volunteer, coach and public servant. My oldest son had her as a teacher just before her retirement. She died in 2010.
She was involved in the community in many ways outside of the classroom, including serving 21 years on the Lan-Oak Park District Board, as a village trustee for eight years and also serving as a school board member and a member of the Kiwanis Club and Lansing Lions.
A scholarship is being offered in honor of Leach, with applications available through Thornton Fractional South High School. To be eligible, you must live in Lansing and must have attended a public school in Lansing School District 158 from kindergarten through eighth grade and attend T.F. South H.S. for four years. Applications are due May 1. For more information, call T.F. South H.S. at (708) 585-2000. Donations are also being accepted to continue the scholarship fund.
