Thornton Fractional North High School students are doing their part to support our nation’s troops and show their gratitude for their service.

In December, Junior Board members sent more than 100 holiday cards to veterans, servicemen and servicewomen and their families across the U.S. and overseas in the "Holiday Mail for Heroes" program, sponsored by the Red Cross and Pitney Bowes. Throughout January and February, the T.F. North History Club is partnering with Albanese Candy in Valparaiso to raise at least $1,000 to send Valentine’s Day candy care packages to troops stationed in the Middle East.

If you would like to donate to the "Treat for the Troops" program, contact Bill Weber at wweber@tfd215.org. You can find out more about the History Club’s activities by visiting www.tfd215.org/north and going to the activities tab.

Students and staff at both T.F. North and Thornton Fractional South have participated in various tournaments and fundraising activities throughout the years to help fight against cancer. At 7 p.m., March 15, T.F. South staff will play the Harlem Wizards, a renowned show basketball team, in a charity “celebrity” basketball game at the Lansing school, 18500 Burnham Ave. Tickets will be available at the school for $7 in advance and $10 at the door. All proceeds from the game will be donated to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, founded by legendary college basketball coach Jim Valvano and ESPN.

A firm believer that parents should be partners in their children’s education, Superintendent Creg E. Williams encourages parents to participate in the series of workshops sponsored by District 215 including a free parent empowerment workshop on Feb. 23. The purpose of the event, which will be held in the T.F. North auditorium, 755 Pulaski Road, and available in both English and Spanish, is to provide parents with resources and tools to ensure their children’s success in high school and beyond. There are limited spaces available and those interested in attending the event should RSVP with Mrs. Evans at sevans@tfd215.org or (708) 585-1000 by Feb. 20.

The district is hosting other free programs for parents and community members, including gardening, cooking and fitness workshops, through its 21st Century Grant Program. A list of the activities and schedules may be accessed by going to www.tfd215.org, going to the “about us” tab, and clicking on the 21st Century link. Contact Tammy Johnson at (708) 585-2383 or tjohnson@tfd215.org for more information.
