The countdown to the start of school — likely filled with shopping trips for school supplies and "back-to-school" clothes — is in full effect across our area.

As we approach the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, we would like to inform you of several important dates, deadlines, and upcoming events so that you can adequately prepare your child for the start of school.

Starting with this school year, all District 215 students will have to show proof they received the Tdap (combined tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine, or have a school-approved religious or medical exemption, in order to complete the registration process. The St. Bernard Hospital Mobile Pediatric Van will be at Thornton Fractional North, 755 Pulaski Road, on Monday, Wednesday, Aug. 12, and 14 to administer physicals and immunizations to all D.215 students. Additionally, Catholic Charities is hosting a health fair, where free medical exams and screenings will be provided, on Saturday at Seton Academy, 16100 Seton Road in South Holland. Call (708) 333-8379 for more health fair event details.

Online registration for students at T.F. North and South began July 9. Log onto the district homepage www.tfd215.org and click on the pre-registration link to get started. This process must be completed before the residency verification and book pick-up can be completed. Residency verification, fee payment, and book pick-up for all District 215 schools will take place during the week of Aug. 5. Visit each school’s website for additional details.

On Aug. 10, T.F. North and T.F. South will host orientation meetings for parents and students in all grades. The Thornton Fractional Center For Academics & Technology will have its parent meeting on Aug. 29. The purpose of these informational meetings is to discuss the curriculum and set clear expectations for the school year. Call the school’s main office for more information.
