Did you know that this past week has been National Take Your Family to School Week? Sponsored by the National Parent Teacher Association, or PTA, this national observance was designed to coincide with the day the organization was founded, Feb. 17, 1897.
For the past 116 years, PTA chapters across the country have been working with families and communities to advocate for the education and well-being of all children.
In collaboration with parent groups from Thornton Fractional North and Thornton Fractional South high schools, District 215 is sponsoring a free parent mini-conference from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Saturday at T.F. North High School, 755 Pulaski Road in Calumet City. Parents from T.F. North, T.F. South, T.F. Center, local elementary and middle schools, and the community are welcome to attend.
Keynote speaker for the event is Sunny Chico, who will share her experiences in education and discuss things that parents can do at home to become more involved in their child’s education.
As well as working with teachers, parents also should work with school counselors to ensure their child’s success. Every year during the first week in February schools across the country celebrate National School Counseling Week to formally recognize counselors’ contributions to our nation’s schools. Our counselors, social workers, and other guidance staff work diligently to ensure that our students have the social, emotional and academic support they need to excel in high school and beyond.
Guidance staff and administrators from T.F. North, South and Center are sponsoring a college and resource fair for special needs students from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the T.F. South cafeteria, 18500 Burnham Ave. in Lansing. Students with Individualized Education Plans and 504 plans from T.F. North, T.F. South and local public and private elementary and middle schools are welcome to attend. The purpose of the event is to provide students with the resources and information they need to successfully transition from high school to placement in post-secondary opportunities. Contact the event coordinator, Kiz Olowe, at (708) 585-2041 for more information.
In other district news, all three winners of the 2013-14 Calumet City vehicle sticker contest, themed “I Love This Town" and sponsored by City Clerk Nyota T. Figgs and BMO Harris, are T.F. North students. First-place winner De’Janira Singleton, second-place winner Nidia Trinidad and third-place winner Michael Ashford received savings bonds and resolutions recognizing their achievements from the Calumet City Council during the Feb. 14 council meeting.
