Dear Son,

Today is your first Halloween. Don’t worry if you can’t remember it because I’ve taken hundreds of pictures documenting all of our activities.

Halloween was always my least favorite holiday because of all the scary images that come with it, but I’ve enjoyed Halloween again thanks to you.

I got to pick out adorable costumes for you. Yes, that was plural. You were just too cute in both costumes we tried and I ended up buying you both.

We went to Van Der Griend Farm Stand in Lynwood to pick out your pumpkin. Actually, Grandma and I picked out your pumpkin while you tried to eat leaves, but I have a feeling you approved.

A few days later, we carved your jack o’ lantern together. Well, I meticulously carved your name into a pumpkin while you sat next to me in your high chair and ate cereal puffs, occasionally tossing a few to the dog.

You helped me scoop out pumpkin seeds. Though that only lasted about 10 seconds until you put them in your mouth and lost your assistant duties.

And, finally, you made me feel brave on our nightly walks past your dad’s Halloween display. Every year since I started dating him, he’s created a haunted yard that attracts kids from all around the neighborhood. This year I talked him into toning it down a little so we could enjoy our first Halloween with you, but even in its toned down state, it’s still eerie at night.

Every time we came home, I got you out of the car as quickly as possible. Then we darted past the creepy clowns and cautiously approached the life size mannequin wearing the “Scream” mask and standing on our porch. Each time I double checked to make sure I saw those mannequin hands and feet before going up the steps. I also turned around every time to make sure he didn’t follow us. I’ve always been a scaredy cat but with you, I was more worried about protecting you than myself.

Thank you, son, because even though you don’t realize what Halloween is yet, you reminded me of what a fun holiday it can be. I know that I will enjoy it for years to come because I will have you by my side.
