Sheriff to participate in East Chicago celebration

EAST CHICAGO - Lake County Sheriff Rogelio "Roy" Dominguez will speak about Latino empowerment at an event to be held Thursday, Sept. 24 at the East Chicago Public Library, 2401 E. Columbus Dr., to celebrate Mexico's Independence Day.

Among others to appear at the event will be the Ballet Folklorico of St. Mary's, Mariachi Santa Maria and Denise Carrasquillo, who will recite a poem by Nobel Prize recipient Octavio Paz. The event will begin at 5 p.m. There is no admission charge.

The library also will have on display through the end of September a replica of a Mexican market, filled with food along with artifacts, information and traditions of Mexico.
