MERRILLVILLE | Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller starts his first term in office trying to give away $5.5 million - to the owners who have misplaced it.
He said Wednesday Hoosiers have abandoned assets worth that much, including the contents of forgotten safe deposit boxes, undelivered stock dividends or paychecks. State law requires him to collect and publicize such property, which must be held by the state for 25 years.
He said his office is holding more than 20,000 Lake County properties valued at $25.4 million, more than 5,000 Porter County properties valued at $5.5 million and more than 5,000 LaPorte, Newton and Jasper County properties worth $5.5 million.
He said anyone can search his office's database of unclaimed property at www.IndianaUnclaimed.com or call toll free at (800) 382-5516 and press 3. - BY TIMES STAFF
