Valparaiso University this week alerted 5,060 people that their names and Social Security numbers were temporarily filed on a computer server that could have been accessed by some students, faculty and staff.

The list contained the names of students, faculty and staff at the university in the spring and summer of 2000, VU spokesman Reggie Syrcle said Wednesday.

A VU employee apparently saved the information on the server inadvertently, Syrcle said. About 150 people had access to the password-protected server. The information was on the server from May 26, 2008, to Sept. 3, 2008.

VU officials have no reason to believe the information was compromised or used inappropriately, but they have notified everyone on the list to help protect them from potential fraud, Syrcle said. There was no evidence anyone from outside the university gained access to the information, he said.
