Hobart School Awards week

American Legion awards were presented last week on Awards Day at Hobart schools in recognition of qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service displayed by local students.

Hobart High School recipients are Matthew Green and Kristi Syjut.

Other community awards presented that evening at HHS went to: Mike Zoladz Memorial Scholarship - Devona Salazar; Don Howell Memorial Scholarship - Nathan Pope; Phi Beta Psi - Matt Green and Crystal Velez; Gary Gephart Memorial Scholarship - Kaylin Keilman; Tri Kappa Scholarship - Karah Hickman; Tri Kappa Outstanding Senior - Matt Green; Sharyl Mitchell Memorial Scholarship - Devona Salazar; Sigma Alpha Chi Scholarship - Emily Markovich and Amie Colby; Schrage Family Scholarship - Matt Green; Hobart Education Foundation Scholarship - Alyssa Murchek and Michelle Gross; Wabash Scholarship - Jeremy Coons and Justin Lyons, and Kiwanis Scholarship - Karah Hickman.

There were also many other honors and athletic awards presented to worthy, hard working students, which leads me to feel that our future is in capable hands.

Getting BUG-ged is good

Bring Up Grades, or BUG, is a Kiwanis program designed to provide recognition to students who raise their grades to an acceptable range and continue to maintain or raise them from one grading period to the next. Recognition includes being placed on the school's BUG Honor Roll, a pizza, ice cream, or other food-themed party, and the presentation of a certificate, pin or other reward. Sponsoring businesses have the option of providing coupons, giveaways, or food for BUG parties.

In Hobart, students are honored by the Hobart Kiwanis Club each grading period that they maintain and raise their grades.

School City of Hobart Associate Superintendent Dr. Peggy Buffington presented a slide show of the new Hobart High School to Kiwanis members at a recent meeting, showing them what to expect when the members visited the new school facility after the meeting. They were very impressed with the state-of-the-art facility that will be ready in January, 2009.

A retirement party will be held soon for Superintendent Dr. Jack Leach, and Buffington will become the new superintendent of schools.
