MERRILLVILLE | A person wanted on a federal cocaine violation was shot and killed Monday after attempting to hit a federal agent with a car across the street from Southlake mall on U.S. 30, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Dennis Wichern, assistant special agent in charge of the DEA, said DEA officers and federal officials were attempting to arrest the suspect about 4:30 p.m. when the suspect attempted to drive a vehicle into an agent near CarMax.
Wichern said the agent, fearing for his life, fired one round at the suspect. Wichern said the suspect was later pronounced dead at the scene.
None of the agents or officers were injured, officials said.
He couldn't release the identity of the suspect Monday night, but said the shooting is now under investigation by Merrillville police.
Merrillville police Operations Cmdr. Lance Huish said he couldn't comment on specific details of the shooting Monday.
"We're still tying to sort it out," Huish said.
Merrillville police were investigating the shooting at the scene Monday, and officers from the Lake County Sheriff's Department and Hobart police were also at the scene.
A CarMax manager said no employees from the car dealership witnessed the incident.
