DYER | A small fire erupted Tuesday afternoon at a Dyer gas station when a woman left a gas pump nozzle in her fuel tank and drove away.

No one was injured, and the fire was contained, Dyer Fire Chief Thad Stutler said.

Shortly after noon, the woman pulled up to Speedway, 718 Joliet St., pumped gas and pulled away without putting the nozzle back on the pump, Dyer Detective Cmdr. Ken Croft said.

When she pulled away, she yanked down the entire pump. The hose was supposed to disengage, but it did not, Croft said.

Gas station employees immediately shut off the pump, he said.

Dyer police closed a portion of Calumet Avenue just south of U.S. 30 until the situation was contained.

The gas station was open for business later in the day.
