Car wash | Griffith

The Griffith High School International Club will have a car wash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23 to raise money for a trip to Europe in June 2009. The car wash will be held at Burger King, 1801 45th Ave. Tickets can be purchased from club members or at the car wash for $5 each.

Book club | Gary

Gary Public Library's adult book club will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 26 at the main library, 220 W. 5th Ave. The group will discuss "The Senator and the Socialite: The True Story of America's First Black Dynasty" by Lawrence Graham.

Archaeology | Homewood

South Suburban Archaeological Society will present a slide lecture at 7:30 tonight at Marie Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. The title is "Nubia and the Struggle for Cultural Allegiance in Northeast Africa After Alexander." The program is free and open to the public.

STANDARD OIL | Whiting

Standard Oil Annuitants Club meets at 1 p.m. Sept. 4. The group will have a picnic at 10 a.m. Sept. 11 at Whiting Park and travels at 10 a.m. Sept. 22 to Fair Oaks Farm.

Historical Society | Calumet City

Calumet City Historical Society's current exhibit features artifacts, model cars, model trucks, model gasoline stations and photographs of gasoline stations along the original Route 66 from local citizens. It runs through January 2009. The museum, 760 Wentworth Ave. in Calumet City, is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays and by appointment. The society meets monthly and area residents are invited to become members.

Stamp, coin, postcards | Highland

The Calumet Area Stamp, Coin and Postcard show is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Lincoln Center, 2450 Lincoln St. Admission is $1.

Support group | Lansing

A depression/bipolar support group will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, with the first meeting taking place July 17, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Glenwood-Lansing Road and Wentworth Avenue.

Fish fry | Highland

Highland Elks Lodge 981 will have a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at 3120-45th St. It's $10 per person. Food includes all-you-can-eat deep fried whitefish or chicken strips. Meal includes cottage cheese, three-bean salad and beets.
