LANSING | Despite rumors, no plans are under way to move a former Nazi war plane from Gary to Lansing Municipal Airport, Village President Dan Podgorski said.

"There is no truth to the rumor that any village trustee is involved in relocating any aircraft -- that has any Nazi references -- to the village of Lansing," Podgorski said during the Village Board's May 15 meeting.

However, if the owners of such a plane sought to safely use Lansing's airport, the village would be required by the Federal Aviation Administration to allow it, Airport Manager Bob Malkas said.

The airport attempts to serve all forms of aviation because is it is a publicly funded airport, Malkas said in a letter to the board earlier this month.

"Allowing the airplane to be based at Lansing would be consistent with our federal mandate to service the public," Malkas wrote.

The Federal Aviation Administration "frowns upon" federally funded airports that deny registered aircraft, if they can be accommodated safely, he said.

"A denial of service could place the facility in a condition of noncompliance and jeopardize future funding," Malkas said.

In quash rumors, Malkas determined no plans are under way to move it to Lansing Municipal Airport, he said.

"There were certainly no correspond or reference made on behalf of any trustees to make that happen," Podgorski said.

Rather, a representative of Great Lakes Wing of the Commemorative Air Force asked if the organization could move two of its aircraft to the Municipal Airport, he said.

At the board's May 15 meeting, Lansing Village Trustee Bob Ryan said he received a letter alleging an elected village official was trying to move a Nazi airplane from Gary Chicago International Airport to Lansing.

Ryan said the board should be allowed to discuss the issue before such relocation is allowed.
