Guitar lessons | Calumet City

Learn the fundamentals of guitar playing from Junius Paul, a professional musician who has played all over the United States and the world. Calumet Memorial Park District is offering guitar lessons for ages 10 to adult from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 4 to Oct. 9. The fee is $20 per student. Registration is now being taken at the Sandridge Center, 600 Oglesby Ave. Participants must bring their own acoustic guitar.

Community night | Chicago

The Hegewisch Bulldogs cheerleaders will have a community night from 6 to 9 tonight at Wendy's on 118th and Ave O in Chicago's East Side neighborhood. Fifteen percent of what is made during those hours will benefit the girls.

Car show | Calumet City

Calumet City Chamber of Commerce is planning to have a car show. Car aficionados of all ages can come out from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 to River Oaks East parking lot for the show. The chamber is seeking sponsors and donors of door prizes.

Labor Day | Chicago

Chicago's Pullman neighborhood will have a Labor Day celebration at 2 p.m. Sept. 1 at the old Pullman factory, Clocktower, 11035 S. Cottage Grove Ave. Attendees will meet personalities associated with history's labor struggles: Jennie Curtis, Eugene Debs, A. Philip Randolph and President Franklin Roosevelt. The free program is sponsored by the Pullman Community, the Labor History Society, and Illinois AFL-CIO.

Flea market | South Holland

The South Suburban College men's and women's basketball teams are hosting a fundraiser and are looking for sellers and buyers for a one-day flea market. The flea market will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at the main campus in South Parking Lot E next to the Fitness Center. There is a $25 fee for vendors.

Popcorn social | St. John

Time for Kids will host a popcorn social for children with special needs from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at 8307 Wicker Ave. There is a $3 admission fee. There is no fee for parents/guardians, who are asked to stay.

Food vendors | Highland

Applications are now being accepted for food vendors for the Midwest Zest Fest, taking place Sept. 5 to 7. The cost for food booth vendors is $450 for a 10-by-10-foot space. Trailers cost $475 for 16 feet of trailer (not including hitch). No duplicate vendors will be accepted for food vendors. Applications are available at the Highland Chamber of Commerce, 8536 Kennedy Ave.

Harvest Fest | East Chicago

Sunnyside's annual Harvest Fest will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 30. It will feature a back-to-school "So You Think You Can Dance" contest patterned after the TV show. Activities will include a senior bingo, bingos, refreshments, live music, games, Ronald McDonald Magic Show and special appearance by Gemel and Jessenia Tribble, sister and brother singing duo from Gary. Charity ride | Northwest Indiana

The eighth annual charity ride for Opportunity Enterprises begins at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 30. Last bike out is noon, last bike in is 5 p.m. Start at John's Place in Griffith and end at Waterfront Lounge in Lake Station. It's $15 per person and $25 per couple. There will be door prizes, live music, food and 50/50.

Tournament | Schererville

The Schererville Parks Department is inviting ages 50 and over to participate in a free "friendly" tournament of volleyball skills, bean bag toss and bunco Sept. 3 at Redar Park and the Schererville Town Hall. Light refreshments will be provided and prizes will be awarded. There are no fees but registration is required.

Arts, crafts | Highland

The Highland Band Boosters will hold its annual fall arts and craft show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 9 at Highland Middle School. It is $55 for a 10-by-10 space for two days. No vendors. Electricity is available upon request. There will be crafts, concession stand, silent auction and turkey raffles.

Big band | Schererville

Schererville Parks will host "Evening Under the Stars" with big band music performed by Ron Smolen's Orchestra. The event will be held from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Redar Park. Admission is free. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved to Grimmer Middle School.

Car wash | Highland

A car wash is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 6 at Blue Top Drive Inn, 8801 Indianapolis Blvd. All the donations and cost of the vehicle washes will go to the MS Walk being held at Purdue University Calumet on Sept. 14. The early washes will be done by the Boy and Girl Scouts and Highland Key Club for Kim's Team Indy. The later washes will continue with volunteers from Hooter's Restaurant in Schererville. The cost is $5 per car and $7 per truck or van.

Spay/neuter | Northwest Indiana

The Humane Society of Northwest Indiana will have a low cost spay/neuter day Sept. 8. The price for dogs under 80 pounds is $70. It's $90 for dogs more than 80 pounds. It is $40 for male cats and $50 for female. All animals must be current on their rabies vaccine or an additional $15 for the vaccine will be added.

Museum trip | Munster

LACARE Art League is sponsoring a trip to the Museum of Science & Industry on Oct. 20. The bus will depart at 9 a.m. from the parking lot at 45th and Fran-Lin. The bus will leave the museum at 3. The tour of the Smart House will begin at 10 a.m. and then attendees are free to explore on their own. The cost is $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers. Payment must be made by Sept. 22.

Ice skating | Dyer

Midwest Training and Ice, 10600 White Oak Ave., will be offering a parent and child ice skating class from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Tuesdays or Thursdays beginning Sept. 2.
