The much traveled Graf Zeppelin, headed leisurely toward its American base at Akron, Ohio, today after an early morning cruise over the World's Fair. Thousands of Calumet Region residents were disappointed when the dirigible made a short circuit over Chicago and then headed due east without a scheduled swing over Hammond.

Today was homecoming at Valparaiso university and the city was in gala togs for the big event. Last night the students held a bonfire and snake dance. This afternoon a big parade and football game at Brown Field between the varsity and St. Viator college were the big features. A banquet and dance will be held this evening.

Judge T. J. Sullivan of the Crown Point Circuit Court called a halt on all mortgage foreclosures in his court until defendants have a had time to make effort to meet the claims though the Home Loan bank.

John Hall and Roy Pierce, two Valparaiso city mail carriers, carried their last mail Tuesday. Today the men who have seen more than 30 years of service are enjoying life on a pension. Hall entered the service on Oct. 1, 1898, and became a regular in 1902, serving 35 years. Pierce joined the service on Jan. 1, 1903, and has completed more than 30 years of service. Fred Reibly and Ernest Lembke have been recommended for regular carrier jobs.

Hundreds of friends of the slain John Plynn, night club proprietor and politician of Calumet City, filed past his bier to pay their respects. Many who tip-toed through his luxurious home at 904 Wentworth Ave., were those he had helped in times of need.

Not a Scout attended a meeting in Valparaiso last night at which merit badges were to be handed out. Officials were present, but the lure of Halloween was too much for the Scouts.

Hammond street and traffic departments apparently will function the rest of the year despite soaring over the 1958 budget appropriations by $64,626.

The Salvation Army was the newest member of the Porter County United Fund. In announcing the addition to the organization, United Fund President Albert Dogan said the action was taken in order to assure all Porter County of the full services of the Salvation Army.

"The most talented daughter of Indiana," Miss Betsy Palmer of East Chicago, has quit her $100,000-a-year television "Today" show. Palmer said she quit because "sometimes you can have your cake and eat it, too, but you can't roll around in the crumbs and that's what I was trying to do."

A group of 20 northern Indiana mayors, reporters and photographers toured the Wheeler Nike Base. The visitors were welcomed by Col. A.W. Masters, 22nd Group commander and heard a talk by Capt. Thomas Minto who gave a briefing on the Nike and air defense programs and the local Nike installation.

George Blumfield, 13, of Rt. 7, Crown Point, was critically wounded when pellets from a 12-gauge shotgun ripped into his right arm, right shoulder and neck in a hunting accident Saturday afternoon.

Alpha Phi Omega, Valparaiso University service fraternity, established an employment bureau to benefit both the community and the student body, President Bob Hall announced. He stated that any merchants or resident of the community wishing to employ a student for part-time work could contact the fraternity and the fraternity would then find a student interested in accepting the job.

Reaction in the Calumet Region to the Grenada invasion was mixed. Most people were surprised by the timing, and sympathetic to the concern that triggered the invasion. But they are split on whether it should have been done.

Construction began for a new $400,000 headquarters for the Visiting Nurse Association of Porter County. The 11,000-square-foot building at 501 Marquette St. will replace an existing office of one-tenth that size at 755 W. Lincolnway. The facility is due for completion next February.

Park board members said Tuesday they won't let the East Chicago lakefront be used as a dumping site for heavily polluted dredgings.

Iron workers ply their trade on the addition to the Valparaiso branch of the Porter County YMCA. The 100-by-600-foot addition will house a gymnasium and men's and women's locker rooms.

Former Patrolman Gary Harris won't return to the police force, but will receive a $13,000 payment, according to a compromise agreement finalized this week. Harris has agreed to resign from the police department and drop his lawsuit.

Valparaiso Community Schools Superintendent R. James Risk, School Board president Robert Malackowski and Valparaiso High School Principal Garth Johnson were in Washington, D.C., and received a flag on the White House lawn as part of ceremonies recognizing the high school's Excellence in Education Award.
