DIABETES EDUCATION | Merrillville

A free Diabetes Education class will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 29 at Family Medicine and Wellness Center, 5495 Broadway. Gain an understanding of diabetes, identify target blood glucose levels and A1C goals, recognize symptoms of hypoglycemia and the effects of food and exercise on glucose levels and begin treatment plans and medications,.

SKATE ON BREAK | Crown Point

Crown Point Skate Park will be open for spring break from noon to 6 p.m. March 24 through 30 and April 7 through 11. Regular spring hours will be noon to 6 p.m. (weather permitting) on Saturdays and Sundays beginning April 5. The Skate Park is at 1313 E. North St. Admission fee for participants is $5 per day. Season passes are available at $25 for residents and $35 for nonresidents. Skate park passes must be purchased in the parks office between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

HEALTHY INDIANA | Hobart

A free presentation to introduce the Healthy Indiana Plan, a new, affordable health insurance program for uninsured adult Hoosiers, will be held at 5:30 p.m. March 25 in the auditorium of St. Mary Medical Center, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave. The program is sponsored by the state and only requires minimal monthly contributions from the participant. It is designed to fill the gap for working Hoosiers 18 to 64 that are not offered health insurance through an employer and find private insurance unaffordable. Attendees will learn about who is eligible, what is covered and what it will cost to participate. Enrollment applications will be available. Use the west tower entrance. CPR & AED TRAINING | Crown Point

Crown Point Fire Rescue Department will offer a free community CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator training session from 6 to 9 p.m. April 2 and the first Wednesday of every month at the Crown Point Fire Rescue Department, 126 N.. East St. Those who successfully complete the course will receive certification cards. Interested residents are required to register by the last Thursday of each month for the following month's class.

TRY YOGA | Merrillville

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department offers Yoga Level I classes from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursdays, beginning March 27 at the Pruzin Center, 5750 Tyler St. This program is for those just beginning yoga or with a little experience, and works on every part of the body, including massaging and stimulating internal organs. Yoga can improve many health conditions, including obesity, nervousness, anxiety, fatigue, mental clarity and circulation. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for nonresidents for five weekly sessions. Register in person and bring ID for verification of residency.

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department offers a new Level II Yoga class from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Fridays, beginning March 28, at the Pruzin Center, 5750 Tyler St. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for nonresidents for five weekly sessions. This class is for those with yoga experience, but still works every part of the body. Register in person and bring ID to verify residency.

WELLNESS FAIR | Crown Point

Annual Health and Wellness Fair is from 10 a.m. until noon March 29 at First Financial Bank, 11890 Broadway. Certified Personal Trainer Richard Stringer will present a "Fitness after 40" discussion at 10:30 a.m. Vendor prizes and refreshments will be included. Vendor space still available.

HEALTH START | Gary

A Healthy Start Health Fair will be held by the Interfaith Clergy Council and Vicinity from 10 a.m. to noon March 29 at Carter Memorial C.M.E. Church, 635 E. 49th Ave. This Health Fair will feature health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and sickle cell markers, colorectal testing, and a cardiovascular work-up. A cardiovascular presentation by Dr. Andre K. Artis will promote a healthier approach to good heart health.

OPEN HOUSE | Portage

The Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana chapter, presents a National Lupus Alert Day open house from 4 to 7 p.m. April 1 at the Portage Lupus office, 2642 Eleanor St. An Ask the Doctor session with Dr. Tarek Kudaimi begins at 6 p.m. The Tell 20 campaign in honor of the chapter's 20th anniversary urges people to distribute lupus information to 20 friends by e-mail, phone, mail, or literature.

MYTHS AND FACTS | Hebron

C.H.O.I.C.E.S. natural birth and parenting network holds free monthly community meetings with preplanned topics at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month at the Hebron Community Center, 611 N. Main St. The April 2 topic is "The Myths and Facts About Pregnancy, Birth & Babies." No registration is required and all are invited. Nursing infants are welcome, but please be considerate of others by making other arrangements for toddlers and older children who may disrupt the program.

HEALTH FAIR | Hammond

The Wellness Center at Purdue University Calumet is hosting its annual spring health fair from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 2 and 3 in the Student Union Library building at the university, 2200 169th St. Various vendors will provide free screenings such as vision, blood pressure and posture. Admission is free for all.

ALZHEIMER'S SESSION | Munster

Alzheimer's Services of Northern Indiana, affiliated with the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, offers Memory Loss in Later Life at 6 p.m. March 25 at Hartsfield Village, 10000 Columbia Ave. Barbara Dzikowski, program director for Alzheimer's Services, will explain memory loss in later life - what's normal and what's not. She'll address what people can do to maintain memory, and she will answer individual questions. Seating is limited; RSVP.
