PARENTING SEMINAR | Schererville

Lake Hills Baptist Church offers Adventures in Parenting, a parenting seminar, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 17 at the family center, 9209 W. 85th Ave. Family counselor Frank Humber will lead the session. Parents of children of all ages are welcome, including those who plan to begin a family. The cost is $10 per adult. Child care will be provided; reservations are requested for the service by calling the office. Walk-ins are welcome, but advance registration is preferred.

EFFECTIVE DISCIPLINE | Hammond

The School City of Hammond's special education department presents "1-2-3 Magic" by Dr. Thomas Phelan from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Wallace Elementary School, 6235 Jefferson Ave. The program offers tips for effective discipline for children 2 to 12 years old. This time-tested program provides easy-to-follow steps for disciplining without yelling, arguing or spanking. Participants also will learn when - and how - their silence can speak louder than they think. Lenora Bularzik, from the school city, will use excerpts of this video and some of her own material. POKER RUN | Hammond

The third annual Joe. B. Memorial Poker Run and Block Party will take place May 17. It's sponsored by The Cavalier Inn and the American Veterans Motorcycle Riders Association, Chapter 1 in Hammond. Riders should sign up at Cavalier Inn, 735 Gostlin St. Fees are $20 for single riders and $30 for doubles. The first bike leaves at 11 a.m. with the last bike in at 4 p.m. A moonwalk, bean bag tournament, 50/50 raffles, motorcycle rodeo, food and drinks will be available. Music will be provided by DJ TK Digital. Bands performing include The Bed Bugs and& Between The Covers. Proceed benefit: JJ Golub, a 16-year-old sophomore at Highland High School. On Nov. 13, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. He is recovering from surgery and undergoing chemotherapy. Donations are welcome.

OPEN HOUSE | Highland

The Our Lady of Grace preschool will have an open house from 3 to 7 p.m. May 15 at 3025 Highway Ave. Those who have a child who will be 3 or 4 years old by Aug. 1 can learn about the preschool program. Information also is available by calling Emily Hackett. Registration is due by May 30.

MEATLOAF DINNER | St. John

St. John Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 717 will host a meatloaf dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 14 at the post, 10400 W. 93rd Ave. Dinner includes meatloaf, salad, mashed potatoes, dessert and coffee, tea or milk for $7 for adults and $4 for children younger than 12.

Yoga Band Class | Dyer

Dyer Parks and Recreation Department offers a yoga band class, which maximizes yoga practic and adds variety to workouts for beginners or those who have practice yoga for years. Class meets from 6:15 to 7:10 p.m. Mondays, May 19 to June 30 (except May 26), or Wednesdays, May 21 to June 25, in activity room B at Town Hall, 1 Town Square. Yoga poses are combined with band resistance to increase the strength and tone of the major muscles while increasing flexibility and overall relaxation. Participants provide their own mat. Fee is $42 for residents and $45 for nonresidents. Register by May 16.

BIBLE STUDY | E.C.

The public is invited to join a Bible study at noon Saturdays at Meek Baptist Church, 4830 Alexander Ave. The Rev. Cullen brooks is senior pastor. At 1 p.m. a live radio broadcast starts on 88.7 FM, WGVE. On the second and fourth Saturdays, food is given out after the service.

CHILDREN OF DEAF PARENTS | Merrillville

Teen and adult children of deaf or hard-of-hearing parents can share their stories, hear about available resources and meet with other adults of deaf or hard-of-hearing parents during a presentation from 6 to 8 p.m. May 15 at Everybody Counts, 9111 Broadway, Suite A. Diane Jones will lead the presentation along with a panel. The program is sponsored by Indiana Freedom, Access, Community, Empowerment and Support. GRANDMOTHERS CLUB | Highland

Highland Grandmothers Club hosts its May luncheon May 15 at the Carmelite Banquet Hall, 1628 Ridge Road. Luncheon will be served at noon. Guests are welcome. The annual card and bunco party will be hosted by the Highland Grandmothers at 1 p.m. May 18. Tickets cost $5 per person and will not be sold at the door. Proceeds benefit the children's cancer fund.

FISH FRY | Hammond

The annual fish fry hosted by First United Methodist Church in Hammond is 5 to 7 p.m. May 17 at 6635 Hohman Ave. Ocean perch, baked potato, cole slaw, green beans, rolls, dessert and coffee or lemonade are included in the dinner. A children's menu will be available. Dinners cost $9 for adults and $4.50 for children 4 to 12 years old. Advance ticket purchases are appreciated.

VIOLENCE PREVENTION | Gary

Community Organizations for Families and Youth hosts a youth violence prevention conference later this week. Adults will gather from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 16 at Genesis Convention Center, 1 Genesis Plaza. Youths in eighth to 10th grade will meet from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 17 at the John Will Anderson Boys & Girls Clubs, 25 W. Fifth Ave. The conference is designed to attract participate to develop strategies and action plans to address and combat youth violence throughout Gary. COFY is a group of empowering social service agencies with the goal to build a strong foundation and capacity to serve youths and families living in Gary. Registration is $50 for adults; registration for youths will be paid for by partnering organizations. Marcus Martin is the conference coordinator.

CASINO TRIP | Whiting

The Whiting Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a trip June 5 to Four Winds Casino. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. from the Whiting Community Center, 1938 Clark St., and return to Whiting about 4 p.m. The registration deadline is May 16 or sooner if the quota is met. Fee of $25 includes transportation, $10 voucher that can be used for food, retail or slot play and $5 instant slot credit. Register.

SEE AMERICA | Hammond

The Lake County Convention and Visitors Bureau will celebrate See America Week through May 18 with special events at the center, 7770 Corinne Drive. Bill Petree, owner of Sunny Sky's Bicycle Repairs, gives a bike care and repair demonstration at 10 a.m. May 17.l There will be a focus on thenewly released Northwest Indiana bike trail maps. The welcome cneter is near two of the bike trails. The demonstration is free and open to the public. See America Week allows residnts to rediscover what the South Shore has to offer.

PARISH DANCE | Munster

Our Lady of Grace Parish of Highland honors its parishioners and alumni with a Mass and dinner dance May 24. Mass is at 4:30 p.m. and dinner and dancing will be at 6 p.m. at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. Tickets cost $40 per person and may be bought at the school office. Our Lady of Grace is especially honoring the class of 1958 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of graduation from school. In addition, the classes of 1968, 1978, 1988, and 1998 will be celebrated.

American Legion Post 369 will have a spaghetti and meatballs lunch and dinner May 16 at the post, 1401 W. Chicago Ave. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. The cost is $6 per person for this all-you-can-eat meal.
