Portage suspect had lived at Spring Valley Shelter
VALPARAISO | Valparaiso police have arrested a man who they say left child pornography behind when he moved out of a Valparaiso homeless shelter and got his own home in Portage.
Michael T. McGinley, 38, of 5726 Old Porter Road, Lot 31, Portage, was arrested Friday on a felony child exploitation charge.
McGinley was found to have about 2,000 pornographic images and 14 pornographic movies -- almost all involving child pornography -- on his computers and on homemade discs, police said.
Valparaiso Detective Lt. John Ross said the child pornography was discovered in February by the person who was taking over McGinley's unit at Spring Valley Shelter. The new resident, who had been asked to clean the unit, gave the disc he found to staff.
The discovery was finally reported to police June 26 and the disc was turned over.
"In viewing the disc, there were images clearly of child pornography," Ross said.
Ross said McGinley admitted he received child pornography via the Internet. A search of his home led to the confiscation of two computers and more discs. McGinley also admitted e-mailing images, Ross said.
Ross said there is no indication that any local children were photographed or harmed.
"Most of it appeared to be commercially shared pornography," Ross said.
The investigation continues and the U.S. Secret Service is assisting Valparaiso police with a forensic examination of McGinley's computer equipment.
