CROWN POINT

City reminds residents of fireworks ordinance

The Crown Point Police Department is reminding residents of the city's ordinance that governs the use of fireworks. The ordinance limits the times and dates that residents may shoot off fireworks.

Fireworks may be used between 5 p.m. and two hours after sunset June 29 and 30, July 1 to 3 and July 5 to 9. Fireworks may be used from 10 a.m. to midnight July 4.

Those convicted of violating the ordinance are subject to a fine of not less that $100 and no more than $2,500.

The ordinance is available on the city's Web site and copies are available at the Police Department, 124 N. East St.

MERRILLVILLE

Molotov cocktail thrown through home window

Police are investigating a second arson reported this week.

Residents of a home in the 1000 block of East 61st Avenue told police a male pulled up outside about 1:20 a.m. Thursday in a dark Chevrolet Lumina or Cavalier and threw a beer bottle filled with gasoline through the window.

The Molotov cocktail landed on a couch and started a small fire, which residents doused before it could spread.

Merrillville police Detective Jeff Rice said the motive for the incident is unknown. He is asking anyone with more information regarding the incident to contact him at (219) 769-3531.

Police said the crime is unrelated to an intentionally set fire Tuesday morning that damaged a 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the 900 block of West 61st Avenue.

HOBART

Hobart man charged with grabbing officer

Timothy Michael Flood, 50, of Hobart, was charged with battery on law enforcement, disorderly conduct and public intoxication following an incident in the 2900 block of Cypress Street.

Off-duty police officer Justin Ashley said Wednesday night he went outside after hearing a disturbance.

He said he saw a verbal dispute between two men, which he tried to break up.

One of the two men started to harass him while the other man walked away.

Ashley said the man who walked away returned and grabbed him.

It was then that Flood was arrested by the off-duty officer.
