Historical society | Lansing

Lansing Historical Society will have a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 at Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave. Bring donated items from 10 a.m. to noon today; 6 to 8 p.m. July 14 or 3 to 5 p.m. July 16. No clothes can be accepted.

Farmers' market | Thornton

A farmers market and arts and crafts fair is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Wednesday through Oct. 15 at Hubbard Park, Hubbard and Margaret streets. There will be fresh fruits and vegetables, hand-crafted breads, pork chop sandwiches, vendors for products such as Avon, Tastefully Simple and Watkins. Vendors are welcome to register throughout the season.

Celebrate Beijing | South Holland

The Youth Services Department at South Holland Public Library, 16350 Wausau Ave., challenges children to get ready for the Olympics. They can learn about Chinese culture through games, crafts and food. Ages 10 to 13 attend at 2 p.m. July 14 and ages 6 to 9 can come at 2 p.m. July 15. Registration is necessary.

Substitute teachers | South Holland

South Suburban College's Office of Continuing Education is offering Substitute Teaching I during summer and fall. These short courses prepare individuals for their first day in the classroom and cover everything about the substitute teacher field including classroom control, licensing, certification, lesson planning, how to gain employment and more. Professionalism and practical information from an experienced instructor will be discussed while providing an understanding of what administrators, teachers and students will expect from an effective substitute for K to 12. The coming summer schedule consists of four consecutive evenings, July 21 to 24, and Aug. 25 to 28. The fall schedule features two sections on Monday through Friday. Section I will take place Sept. 8 to 12, while Section II will be from Sept. 15 to 19. The cost of this program is $69. SSC is at 15800 S. State St.

Wiffle Fest | Homewood

Ages 18 and older can join in the fourth annual Wiffle Fest tournament at 9 a.m. July 19 at Apollo Park, Morgan Street and Bowling Green Road. Teams of three to five players can compete in two divisions: fast pitch or recreational. Teams from at least four states are expected to participate in this event. A round-robin leading to single elimination format will be used. All pre-registered players will receive a lunch and T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams. A youth event will be held for kids in fifth through eighth grades and high school at 10 a.m. July 18.

College for Kids | South Holland

South Suburban College's Continuing Education Department is offering courses to entertain and challenge children and young adults. SSC's College for Kids program offers classes at the main campus in South Holland and the University & College Center in Oak Forest. The next session will begin throughout the week of July 14. There is also a four-week Jam Session Day Camp starting on July 14. The Jam Session Camp provides students with day-long programs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In addition to reading and math, students will enjoy a variety of other stimulating activities, such as Spanish and art. The Jam Sessions are targeted for students in first through eighth grades at a cost of $329.

Basketball camp | South Holland

The South Suburban College Basketball Program will host a Championship Basketball Camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11 through 13. The camp is designed for boys and girls ages 7 to 17, and will be directed by Coach John Pigatti and players from the 2008 basketball team that finished fifth in the nation.

The main goal of the camp is to give each individual a chance to become a better player and to have some fun along the way. The emphasis will be on the fundamentals of basketball. Each player will be drilled in these fundamental skills and will participate in a variety of contests in their age bracket. Daily games will be played, giving each camper a chance to display those skills as a member of a working team in their age group.

The cost of the camp is $70 per camper for all four days of instruction and a T-shirt. Each camper will need shorts, basketball shoes, and a T-shirt or practice uniform. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase every day of camp.

Y-ME MEETING | Munster

Northwest Indiana Group of Y-ME Illinois meets at 10 a.m. today and the second Saturday each month in the Doctors' Meeting Room in Community Hospital's cafeteria, 901 MacArthur Blvd. Breast cancer patients, their families and friends, and health professionals are welcome. POWER STEAM SHOW | Crown Point

South Lake Agricultural Historical Society Inc. presents its 24th Annual Antique Power Steam Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and July 13 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. Operating steam engines, sawmills, threshing machines, balers and old farming tools, wagons, small engines, horse shoeing and early agricultural equipment are displayed. Antique cars and trucks, a garden tractor pull and farm toy show are featured as well as a petting zoo and model railroad display. Entertainment, food and a flea market. John Deer tractors and Witte small engines are featured this year. Admission is $4 for adults and free for youths 15 and younger with an adult. Parking is free.

FITNESS CLASS | Schererville

Omni 41 will offer the Les Mills BODYPUMP program at the fitness center, 221 S. U.S. 41. It's a 60-minute toning and conditioning class with weights and is for just about anyone who wants to add strength training into their aerobic workout. The class is at 10:15 a.m. July 26. It's open to members and nonmembers. Registration opens today. Space is limited.

GROUP PROGRAMS | Hobart

Bring a group to Deep River County Park this summer to participate in the Historical Discovery Series. Day care centers, summer camps, church groups and any group of 10 to 25 children ages 4 and older may reserve a program time on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday through July 3. Programs are offered at 9:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m., and groups can bring a picnic lunch to enjoy before or after the program in the park at 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Topic change each week, and groups can book more than one program. To reserve a program time, call (219) 769-PARK. The topics are: Parachute Fun on July 15-17, Letterboxing Through the Park on July 22-24 and Toys and Games on July 29-31. The cost is $1 per child, with a $10 payment required to secure the reservation. The remainder of the fee can be paid at the program time. Chaperones must remain in the park and may be asked to assist. Programs are held rain or shine; picnic tables and restrooms are available; bring insect repellant.

ALL ABOUT REPTILES | Hammond

"Reptiles and Amphibians" is a Wild, Wild Woods program for ages 7 to 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 16 at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve, 6201 Parrish Ave. This program is all about snakes and turtles, frogs and salamanders. Turtle races, a chance to live like a snake with no arms or legs, and the game secret salamander are included. A turtle and snake will stop by for a visit. Fee is $5 and registration is required.
