HOBART | The parks department will solicit bids for the first phase of the city's portion of the Oak Savannah Trail.
Hobart Parks Superintendent Vic Levan said First Group Engineering asked the city to advertise bids for the trail from Lake Park Avenue to City Ball Park.
The city plans to eventually extend the bike trail from City Ball Park, through downtown Hobart, east to Cleveland Avenue, but the right-of-way necessary for the trail has not been acquired yet. An offshoot of the trail would attach to the existing trail through City Ball Park, and a different branch could lead to Lakefront Park on Lake George. Another offshoot could lead to Fred Rose Park.
Levan said bids for the project will be accepted through April 11. He hoped construction would begin within 30 days of awarding of the bid. It is unclear how much the segment of the trail will cost, but the money for the trail will come from grants and a park bond.
Once completed, the trail will connect existing portions of the trail from Lake Park Avenue on the west and Ind. 51 and Cleveland Avenue on the east.
