NEW STUDENTS | Hammond

Calumet College of St. Joseph will host New Student Enrollment Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 7. It is not too late to enroll for the fall. This day is designed for prospective students to go through the admissions process and have a decision made that same day. A completed admissions application, as well as transcripts, will be required. The college is at 2400 New York Ave.

INDOOR PICNIC | E.C.

Holy Trinity Hungarian Church offers an indoor picnic from noon to 7 p.m. Aug. 9 at East Chicago Knights of Columbus Hall, Indianapolis Boulevard and Knights of Columbus Drive. It's the first street north of the South Shore station. A silent auction and cash raffle will be available; drawings will take place after the picnic and winners will be notified. Food will be sold including Hungarian stuffed cabbage dinners, pork stew and dumplings dinner and sausage sandwiches, as well as hot dogs, elephant ears, beer, wine, pop, coffee, water, noodles and homemade baked goods.

CRIMINAL'S CORNER | St. John

Criminal's Corner meets at 10:15 a.m. Aug. 12 at the Lake County Public Library's St. John branch, 9450 Wicker Ave. "The Cat Who Sniffed Glue" by Lillian Jackson Braun will be available for checkout at the circulation desk. Jim Qwilerman and cat companions investigate the murder of a husband and his pregnant wife in the isolated community of Pickax.

PET PORTRAITS | Munster

Pet portraits, with or without owners, will be taken by Woolf Studios Aug. 9 through 10 at Humane Society Calumet Area, 421 45th St. Sitting fee is $10 and cost of photo packages varies. All proceeds benefit the animals of the HSCA. Call for an appointment, or walk-ins will be accepted.

NOSTALGIA WEEKEND | Gary

The 24th annual Froebel-Roosevelt Nostalgia Weekend is Aug. 9. The day begins with a picnic from noon to 6 p.m. on the lawn of Froebel high School, 15th and Madison. Music and food will be provided. Chairman Vernon Smith said vendors are sought to set up at the picnic. Booths cost $25 for unsheltered areas and $35 for sheltered spaces. Booths may be reserved at Beautiful Things, 3570 Village Court. At 9 p.m .the annual Oldies But Goodies Dance is at the Genesis Convention Center, 1 Genesis Plaza. Music will be played in memory of Jerry Jones, the deejay for the majority of dances in the last 23 years. Tickets cost $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Buy at Beautiful Things or by phone. Two $10,000 scholarships funds have been established from the proceeds, administered by the Gary Educational Foundation.

CLARK REGISTRATION | Hammond

Clark Middle-High School will register new students by appointment only Aug. 7 and 8. Bring the following items to the appointment: three proofs of residency (mortgage or closing papers, NIPSCO bill, water bill, current driver's license, check stub with current address, printout of public aid or medical card or printout from Social Security benefits), withdrawal papers from previous school, any special education documentation (if applicable), physical form and updated shot record, original birth certificate (no copies) and student's Social Security number. Schedule pickup for current students is 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2:30 p.m. as follows: seventh and eighth grade Aug. 4, ninth and 10th grade Aug. 5 and 11th and 12th grade Aug. 6.

FEST BOOTHS | Highland

The Highland Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the Midwest Zest Fest, Sept. 5-7. The cost is $120 for a 10-by-10booth space (tents, tables and chairs not provided) for a handmade arts and crafts vendor and $150 for a home-based seller such as Mary Kay, Avon or Pampered Chef. Space is limited, so sign up early. Handmade arts and crafters may download an application online at www.midwestzestfest.com. Home-based vendors should call to see if there is another vendor selling that produce.

NEEDLE ARTISANS | Munster

Needle Artisans of Northwest Indiana meets at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at Community Park Social Center, 8751 Lions Club Drive. It's open stitch; participants can bring their own project to stitch and show. Guests are welcome. Those who participate in a class must be a member of the guild and register in advance. Members come from throughout Chicago's south suburbs and Northwest Indiana.

ANIMAL AUCTION | Crown Point

Lake County 4-H Department will conduct its annual 4-H Small Animal and Livestock Auction at 4 p.m. Aug. 9 in the Livestock Show Pavilion at the Lake County Fair, 889 S. Court St. Individual buyers and buyer groups are welcome and fair passes can be arranged. Call to request a buyers packet. Donations toward the auction sales are also appreciated.

FALL HARVEST | Griffith

Applications are being accepted for the annual Fall Harvest Craft Show held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 27 and 28 at Central Park on Broad Street. Only hand-made items are accepted.
