Police in both Schererville and Merrillville already have been given a heads-up regarding U.S. 30 construction work slated to start Monday in both communities.

Memos about the upcoming construction have been distributed to police patrols in both departments and officers will be monitoring roadways to ensure motorists are complying with posted speed limits and lane closures, Merrillville Police Chief Nicholas Bravos and Schererville police Sgt. Larry Mysliwiec both said.

"It will probably be a mess," Mysliwiec said.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will temporarily restrict lanes during the night, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning on Monday, INDOT LaPorte District spokesman Joshua Bingham said.

The resurfacing project will extend for six miles on U.S. 30, starting from U.S. 41 in Schererville and extending to Ind. 55 in Merrillville, Bingham said.

"It's a very busy roadway so we're trying to minimize the negative impact on the commuter by restricting lanes at night," he said.

The average daily traffic count on that stretch of U.S. 30 is 51,330 vehicles, he said.

Through the scheduled completion date of August, one lane at a time will be restricted at various points along the project's six miles of U.S. 30 as work progresses.

"Traffic will be directed around the moving operation through the aid of portable arrow boards. No road closures or detours will take place during the project," Bingham said.

The construction project also includes replacement of all signs on U.S. 30 for 14 miles, starting from U.S. 41 to the Lake/Porter county line.

The state highway department typically replaces its signs on a 10-year cycle, and it's been that many years since the present signs were placed, Bingham said.

Cost of the U.S. 30 project is $2.8 million. That was the winning bid from Walsh and Kelly Inc., of Griffith, which was awarded the contract from INDOT earlier this spring.
