SPRING FLING | Hammond
The parents and staff of St. John Bosco School invites the public to its Spring Fling from 6 to 10 p.m. April 12 at 1231 171st Place. The event is designed to provide family fun for all ages. Food, kids' games, silent auction, Vegas-style gaming tables and a dance floor will be available. Magician Steve Kellogg will perform from 7 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.

BOOK TALK | Griffith
A discussion on "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult is set for 7 p.m. April 16 at the Lake County Public Library's Griffith branch, 940 N. Broad St. In the book, 13-year-old Anna walks into the office of lawyer Campbell Alexander and announces she wants to sue her parents for the rights to her own body. Anna was conceived after her older sister, Kate, developed a rare form of leukemia and needed bone marrow. Now she has been asked to donate a kidney and she intends to refuse. Dessert will be served.

IRISH CULTURE | Hammond
Music, dancers, traditional Irish food and exhibits are among the festivities scheduled during Purdue University Calumet's Irish Culture Fest, set for 2 to 5 p.m. April 12 in Alumni Hall of the Student Union & Library, on 173rd Street three blocks east of Indianapolis Boulevard. Erin Go Bragh - Ireland Forever, will feature such performers as the Larkin and Moran Band, Mayer Dancers, Lake County Sheriff Bagpipers and the Dennehy Dancers. Arts and crafts will be displayed. Additionally, representatives of regional Irish specialty shops will be on hand to exhibit their wares. Attendees can enjoy a light meal of authentic Irish dishes prepared by Winston's Delicatessen of Tinley Park, Ill. Admission, including refreshments, is free. The culture fest is the latest in Purdue Calumet's Building Community Through the Arts program series, designed to celebrate the ethnic and cultural diversity of northwest Indiana.

Mayor George Pabey presents Wisdom of the Past - Seeds of the Future Gardening Club from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays, April 8 to Aug. 19, at the East Chicago Greenhouse, 1615 E. 142nd St. Participants can learn about gardening and planting flowers and vegetables from seed. They'll create planter boxes, build birdhouses and have a horticulturist on site. Activities and field trips are planned, as well as a luncheon and awards. Transportation may be arranged. Refreshments and supplies will be provided. It's sponsored by the East Chicago Health Department with Parks and Recreation Department and the engineering department.

COMEDY SHOW | Cedar Lake
Directors Paul and Angie Lowe of L'arc en Ciel Theatre Group announce a classic comedy "Don't Drink the Water" by Academy Award-winner Woody Allen at Great Oaks After 4 Club, 13109 Wicker Ave. Remaining shows are at 8 p.m. April 12 and at 2 p.m. April 13. An American embassy in a country behind the Iron Curtain becomes the site of a comic "infiltration" by a New Jersey tourist, his wife and daughter. Tickets include the all-you-can-eat chicken, roast beef, mostaccioli and Italian sausage dinner for $27.50 for adults, $25 for seniors and $22.50 for kids up to age 16. A cash is available. JOB FAIR | Hammond
The City of Hammond hosts its annual job fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 10 at the Jean Shepherd Community Center, 3031 J.F. Mahoney Drive. Financial, service, education, healthcare, gaming, trade unions and other industries in Northwest Indiana and Illinois will be represented. The event is free to companies and participants. A mystery book discussion is at 12:30 p.m. April 14 at the Lake County Public Library's 41st Avenue branch, 3491 W. 41st Ave. In "The Last Detective" by Peter Lovesey, irascible, corpulent, cynical Chief Superintendent Peter Diamond of the Avon and Somersetmurder squad attributes Britain's decline as a world power to the abolition of capital punishment in 1964. Spurning computer gadgetry, he sticks to common sense, index card, and gumshoeing. Dessert will be served.
